FATBOY: quote:Now this I think would be a good idea. The right to arms is a right, so why not have firearms safety taught as a mandatory class in school.

There was a time back in the 40s and 50s in Kansas City Mo. that the high schools had rifle teams . The NRA used to sponsor them and we had firearms safety classes taught to us in school..But Alas, that is a thing of the past. I just read somewhere about a school that still has a rifle team, but the antis were trying to abolish it also..[:(]

I remember firearms safety classes and marksmanship training in the cub scouts and the boyscouts, In fact I still have my old sharpshooters merit badge from the early 50s..[:D]

If you do not support such, then my apologies to you. From reading it, one would get the opinion that you do. I personally believe that if anyone is sane enough to be in public, then they have the right to bear arms. If a person is such a monster, or so insane that they should not have that right, then they do not belong in public.quote:Originally posted by dcinffxva

Another example of gun owners supporting gun control. What field are they in, or retired from?

Fatboy, you and I have sparred back and forth before. Read the first post, read the rest, and realize I NEVER said I supported this, it was just a discussion.

I had a shooting team at my high school, infact thats what got me into shooting compatition. That was only 15 Years ago, in California too. The diferance was that this was a private christian military school. Our motto was "Praise God and Pass the Ammunition". Good times at that school, the JROTC drill team used Demilitrized M-1 Garands and we got to spend 2 weeks at MCRD San Diego as Devil Pups.

    Like the idea of training.

REALLY don't like the word "mandatory".

    Reject the concept of licensing.

    "...shall not be infringed."

This is not a new idea. It has been one of the favorites of the "gun grabbers" for as long as I can remember.

The right to keep and bear arms is a RIGHT. Driving is a privilege licensed by the states. I'd like to see classes in school to help the younger generations understand the difference.

Your idea of teaching gun safety, handling and marksmanship in school is a good one. Even with a test if you wish. The NRA has been trying to get that one going for over a century.

The first time you tell somebody they are not qualified to exercise their Second Amendment right, there is no more Second Amendment RIGHT.

You are correct that the right to keep and bear arms has already been infringed. Total destruction of it is not the answer.

    True it is.

"Shall not be infringed" means just that.

We should punish the behavior of individuals, not everyone. In addition, we should police ourselves as a society.

Bad, or unbalanced, people do bad, or crazy things. These events are the price of living in a free society.

LT, I am not disagreeing with you. This was just a thought I had while reading through some literature. Our rights are already infringed. They were taken gradually, and I'm looking for an avenue that might get them back, short of armed conflict.

I understand and took no offense. My opinion is a hard line, but then again, that is exactly what I think we, as Americans, need to take. Nothing else will do.

We have gone past the point of no return, particularly if adhering to past methods of "discussion and acceptance" of more "incrementalism".

Your ideas do not pass the "Bill of Rights test". That is the yardstick that I have chosen to use on all things related to individual liberty.

The FACT is that the right to bear arms IS a constitutional right. This should never be 'tested for competency'. Isn't this the same rationelle used by 'good' americans to prevent blacks and women from voting? If the second, like ANY other constitutional right, should ever be found to be 'outdated, unnecessary, oppressive, what ever,' the process is available to amend or eliminate it.

I have said in the past, that guns are a fact of life, not only in America, but in the rest of the world, as well. The bad guys, whether they be crips, nut jobs or government employees, will always have guns. Private citizens must also be able to have them to ensure safety, balance and freedom.

This being stated, it WOULD be in this country's best interest to require all public schools to provide basic gun education. I lived in the coal country of WV for a few years growing up. I recall vividly, being taught the proper handling of blasting caps, in grade school. It boiled down to 'stay away' but at age 8-10, a semester long firearms course would have a lifelong impact on people. These could be taught by NRA certified instructors who volunteer and some could be paid. There are MORE than enough gun owners who would do this. Just a thought.

It figured that you'd crawl out of the woodwork to throw your two cents in. Yea, yea, I've already heard your BS about "being trained in proper flashlight use by the Department of Corrections." You've never been in law enforcement and I don't recall ever hearing that you have served your country in any branch of service. [B)]

First, for all of you reactionists that are just waiting for someone to post something that you disagree with so you may assault them, I never stated that I support any type of gun control. Read my posting and then read it again. I call that selective interpretation on your part. I simply stated that I've wondered why there isn't something similar to the requirements for obtaining a hunting license. Sure, any jackazz can purchase a firearm these days. Just because then can, does that make it right? I don't know. Look at what Cho just did. From some of the posting I've read from the "big talkers" here, I would bet my retirement that some wouldn't pass a firearm competency test if one existed.

ECC, I take your comments: "You are a threat to the 2nd Amendment (and America/our Constitution alltogether)...and have proven yourself to be one on several occassions" as complete BS and a real insult. I thought differently of you before that statement.

Stand on your pedestals and scream at the top of your lungs "I have the right to bear arms" until the cows come home. If you don't like what our govenment is doing, do something about it (instead of attacking people on this forum). I educate people about our right to bear arms, proper gun handling and safe gun storage. I do not agree with gun control in any way, shape, or form. If you believe that I do, you're an idiot and I honestly don't give a rat's azz about your opinion. You're just here to argue and that isn't my purpose for being here. [^]

You flat out stated that you would participate in confiscating people's firearms if ordered to do so...then you went on in this thread advocating further gun control...BOTH of which are in violation of the Constitution.

You're a complete putz and you interpreted your way, not the way it was presented. You paraphrased what I wrote for your own conclusion, which is exactly what I commented about earlier. There are too many people on this forum that take only what they wish to condemn out of any particular postings. ECC does it too.

If you look back into the posting of mine that you just raped, you will see that I stated clearly: "not in my lifetime". Sure, pick out only the parts of anybody's posting that best serves your purpose and you are doing exactly the same thing that the anti-gun people do. Don't use the entire quote, or statement, only use that part that you can critisize. There really are a bunch of jackazzs here that sit around and wait for something to jump on for their own entertainment. Those people are small minded and personal agenda oriented. Try looking at the glass half full sometime, instead of finding it half empty all the time. I'll try my own "labeling" and simply state that some of you are absolutely pathetic.[V]

You were quoted acurately and in context. You lost a lot of respect with a whole lot of folks when you made those comments. You, in fact, became an enemy to the Constitution and the United States of America...an enemy that many of us have sworn an oath to defend against.

Those are your words...you'll have to live with them.

Pretty much. You can't retract a statement like that. There seemed to be no mistaking the clarity and intent behind it.[;)]

I'm afraid that most people that have posted to this have missed the point entirely. This is not about the right to bear arms. It's about stupid people not having proper training with a firearm, that end up being a hazard to those around you. Everyone needs to stop the panic approach to defending their gun rights. Most people here want to be able to own, possess and keep their weapons for the same reason. When someone comes along with a realistic concern or question, similar to the principals used to obtain a hunting license, too many people go off on the 2nd ammendment issue. Step back, take a deep breath and be a little more realistic. [;)]

Perhaps there are far too many unlicenced people on the internet? A licence means nothing except that you shell out money. When has a drivers licence stopped an automobile accident? That is being realistic.

How about a licence to run a radial arm saw? Or a meat slicer?

You say it's not about the right to bear arms. You can own a car and not have a drivers licence. Well, would that mean you could still possess arms, just not be able to use them? Realisticaly, no, you are effectively barred from owning a firearm in direct contrast to the Constitution.

The Darwin Awards illustrates how nature weeds out the morons in the human race. Whether running a radial arm saw, or owning a firearm, there are classes for those that need them. Nature will take care of the idiots and I don't need no stinkin' licence.

This is the key matter. There is no RIGHT to transportation (would have been a horse circa 1788) in the Constitution. Nor is there an IQ or civics qualification for voters and office holders, which would dramatically change the demographics of the pool of eligible voters and the composition of most governments. So Americans have the RIGHT to KBA along with the RIGHT to vote. Those freedoms carry attendant dangers, foremost among them, really, the danger of nut cases such as Cho or al gore.

Well, it is entirely a jerk concept, probably conceived by a jerk who neither understands nor defends the Constitution and is likely to be supported only by other similarly un-American jerks. Put me down as someone who is absolutely opposed to any idea that "Some people shouldn't have guns."
