ok my brother is looking at buying a ar what is the top of the line
thats out there I Know Colt, bushy, armalite (ie spelling) also s&w rockriver what are some others and list in order of top to bottom.

    Does an Ar-15 have a gas system with a piston, I always thought they didnt...anyways if they dont how do they make the action cycle?

    I think this year i can afford to use my Tax return to treat myself to something.[:)] I was thinking of that Sig i mentioned a few weeks ago but maybe it's time to get my first AR-15. I know absolutely nothing about them, is there anything i need to look for that i should be aware of? I saw two a few weeks back but never looked closely at them, one was a little under $700.00 and the other was around $850.00. I actually don't know if they are even AR's or not they just looked clean from acroosed the counter[:)

    I just bought me a stripped lower for a ar-15. First time on this one, never owned one, but I carried one in the service. Any one got any suggestions on the best place (on a tight budget) to get goodies to finish it out??

    Hey folks.
    Has anyone here installed a piece of Al conduit
    over the muzzle break to push the gases further
    out for less blast,
    or is that a bad idea?

    I'd stick with major manufacturers; Colt, Bushmaster, DPMS, Rock River are all good names. I haven't heard good things about Doublestar, and from what I understand, Olympic has gone downhill lately. And don't even touch a Hesse.

    Other things to look for: Does it have a flashhider and bayonet lug? Are you looking for a straight A2 style (think a bare-bones M16 lookin' rifle), or do you want a flat-top so you can mount optics on it? Do you want a 16" or 20" barrel? Collapsable or fixed stock?

    A straight, bare-bones A2 shold go for around $700-750 (at least, that's what they go for around here). If you start adding options, like rail systems, they can get pricy real quick.

    I'll vouch for DoubleStar as being excellent firearms.
    I have been useing them for over ten years and have not had any problems.
    Also look st STAG Arms.

    STAG makes excellent receivers if you want to consider building your own.

    I took this route, knowing nothing about AR-15s (I had never even handled one before). For about $606 (including shipping and FFL fee) I built a decent A2 configuration AR-15. I did run into some problems (mainly the detent springs) but I also learned a ton about how the AR-15 works. You might consider doing this if you like tinkering with firearms.

    The currently accepted rule is to stick with A-B-C-D & R for factory AR's. Armalite, Bushmaster, Colt, DPMS or Rock River.

    Besides the factors already stated, which will mostly be decided upon by your specific needs, pay attention to what barrel you're getting. Besides them having a few different twist rates, some also have chromed bores and chambers. It's a matter of choice, but a factor to consider.

    There's an important point that's often overlooked and can be an indicator of overall workmanship. Pull the bolt carrier and see if the gas key screws have been properly staked. These stake marks should of course extend across the key and the heads. I've seen more than one sloppily assembled name-brand AR where there are only stake marks on the key itself.

    2 questions. 1) How can i save this thread for future referance?(printer down) 2)Is Vulcan a junker? Vulcan is what he had and i was wrong before they are both $779.00 thanks for the help. I did read to stay A,B,C,D & R so i probably will wait then till i find an affordable deal.

    Stick with SIG556. It is MUCH better then any AR-15 clone you can get.

    Rennec, buy a used one---one that you like the looks of---and shoot it. Hang around others who also shoot ARs and ask questions. After you figure out what you really want, A2, M4, CAR, sell the used one and buy something configured how you want it.
    Use caution here, though, if the new AWB gets passed, you might be stuck with what you have as I hear one of the tenants of the new AWB will be the inability to transfer.

    Stay away from Vulcan; IIRC, it's the name Hesse is now operating under.

    One other thing to consider: build yourself a "frankengun".

    You can usually pick up a complete A,B,D (Colts are spendy, and I've never seen a RR lower for sale) lower receiver for less than $300 (closer to $250 if you look hard--I know DPMS sells a complete lower with your choice of A2 or 6-pos collapsable buttstock for $269 at their booth at shows up here in MN); then, get whatever upper you like, they usually run less than $500 (unless you want a varminter, in which case they tend to run $600+). Check out www.Bushmaster.com , they are running a sale, and a couple of days ago they had 16" flattop uppers for $385--the item on sale changes daily (yesterday was M4 handguards; today it's a PSG-1 style pistol grip).
