If you plan on eating them stay with your 22. The 17HMR does a number on em.

The 17HMR and the 17 MachII that Ray B is talking about are two different rounds completely.

If your going to eat the critters (squirrels, smallgame etc)...no, but if you are hunting say ground hogs, prarie dogs, or some larger animal the 17 Mach 2 is great and it can improve your range to at least 150 yards where as a 22 would have lost much of its energy and you would have to compensate for alot of drop. Stay with the 22 if you want to plink or eat the small game...

Most folks shoot squirrels in the eye.I think the 17 will actually make that easier for some folks. In your specific case,I can't see any benefit.I imagine the repro 52 shoots pretty well.I use a Rem 541 with a 3*9 leupold/AO and shorts that will shoot the same hole at 50 yds. all day,but I'm considering a 17M-2 for ground squirrels, sparrows, starlings, ect.I 'm inclined to think it will find it's way to the trees directed at my favorite eating game.My only concern will be that of noise.

Sothere- I've not heard a 17 Mach2. I've guessing that they are considerably over the speed of sound, so result in a sonic snap that carries much farther than the pow of a 22 standard velocity.
