movie suggestions?
anyone seen any really good, "sleeper" or underground movies lately? I keep renting things that look hopeful, and they're usually pretty good, but nothing's blown me out of the water yet. I've seen all the big Hollywood stuff, Transformers (best movie of the year IMO), The 300, Spiderman, etc, but I'm looking for stuff that flies under most people's radar. Any recommendations?

"The Darwin Awards" was funny. "Cocaine Cowboy" was informative. "Sweet Land" and "The Whole Shebang" good family movie (in the lines of "Secondhand Lions" without the porch shooting). Well I'm going to go watch the "Christmas Story" I finally picked it up since all the shops were open early and it was cheap. 0 -

It's not too Dramatic, but a documentary called the War Tapes is currently available for rent. Tells the story of Reservist's and NG's getting called up for active duty. Really highlights their qualities and why Regular Army types hate working with them. 0 -
Boondock Saints is a great cult movie. a few Gun oopsies if i remember but a great gunplay movie. up there with "the Way of the Gun"
as is "Snatch" and "Lock Stock And two Smoking Barrels"0 -
If you can find them,
"The Enemy Below", Robert Mitchem and Curt Jurgen's are opposing Captians in WW2
"The Dam Busters". True story of the famous raid.
"The Lighthorse Men". Australians in the desert in WW1, again based on the true story.
I also liked "The Full Monty", but the humour may pass you by as it is very british!
"The Queen" is also very good.0 -

Haven't seen that in a while. Got to love a Shakespearean play taking place in the '70's in a burger joint. That reminds me James LeGros who plays Joe 'Mac' McBeth was in an excellent movie entitled "Thursday". If you like "Boondock Saints" with more of a "Reservoir Dogs" or "Blood, Guts, Bullets and Octane" you'll be in the right neck of the woods.0 -
Syriana.
This show might not present a political scenario with which all on this board will agree, but it's well enough done that even if you disagree, you should find something to think about.0 -
I like "The Queen" very much. Helen Mirren is amazing, as usual.
"Children of Men" was also surprisingly good.0 -
For a movie with no real point, but tons of laughs, "Escanaba in da Moonlight" is absolutely great. Jeff Daniels is the star, so that should tell you something about it. About a family on the eve of deer season in the UP of Michigan. Daniels' character has a curse on him of never having bagged a buck in a family of hard-core hunters. 0 -

I'll second that. Took the kids and was expecting to take a nap through this one while the kids watched. Stayed awake the entire time because I enjoyed it.
Lately, I've been checking out the older, classic movies on AMC, TCM, etc. when I get a little time. Some great movies on those channels compared to the junk they crank out now.0
