Winchester bought?
Has Winchester been bought? Local shop said several models are planned to be produced by a foreign manufacturer.

Herstal is the current owner, based in Belgium. They will be making "Winchesters" in Japan and Belgium. Maybe that's what you heard. 0 -
Local shop is just guessing (unless he works for winchester, and is releasing insider information). Browning bought winchester, but has not released any plans for new guns. One thing you can take to the bank. Winchesters will never again say Made in New Haven CT. 0 -

Herstal also owns Browning so it's all in the Belgian family.0 -

There have been many questions over the past several weeks about the future and status of Winchester brand rifles and shotguns. Q. I heard that your company is closing down the Winchester firearms factory in Connecticut. Is this true?
A. Yes, this is true. On January 17 of 2006 it was announced that U.S. Repeating Arms Company (the company that makes Winchester brand Model 94s, Model 70s and the Model 1300 Speed Pump Shotgun) would be shutting down one of the factories which makes Winchester guns. The factory is located in New Haven, Connecticut.
Q. Why is the plant being closed?
A. Over the years, many efforts were made to improve profitability at the manufacturing facility in New Haven, and the decision to shut this factory was made after exhausting all available options.
Q. Are there other factories making Winchester products?
A. Yes. Our other factories will continue production uninterrupted. Products made at these factories include the Super X line of shotguns including the new Super X3 autoloader and the new Super X Rifle (SXR) centerfire autoloader. Both are made in Belgium and assembled in Portugal. In addition, we will continue with our line of quality Select over and unders: the only production Belgium-made over and unders in the world. Our special historic guns -- 1885s, 95s, as well as other limited series rifles -- continue to be made at our factory in Japan. These factories are unaffected by the New Haven closure and we continue forward with our production and future plans.0 -
Thats an older report. But, Im sure they will soon announce the new line of belgian or japanese winchesters. My bet is it wont be a 70 or a 94. We'll just have to be patient. 0 -

This effectively took care of the "Union Wages" problem that they needed to eliminate! Can't cut the benefits and wages so you close the plant and move on! Thats the game today!
Most mfg in this country are now in a race to move offshore! Even big ole Intel in Oregon is planning to build a chip plant in China. This gives them, China, all of our chip technology! Not a healthy trend for America.
To force American MFG to compete with third world countries through the joy of NAFTA means, most of the high paying mfg jobs will have to leave the country. Both parties support this program so I guess there must be some benefit to America that us worker bees can't understand!0 -

What most of you need to understand, is that WINCHESTER has not manufactured a firearm of any type since early 1981.
The true WINCHESTER company (a division of Olin) is still very much in business (primarily making ammunition). WINCHESTER (back in early 1981) leased the U.S. Repeating Arms Co. the rights to used the trademarked WINCHESTER name on a number of their products. Very recently, Browning (also owned by FN Herstal) received the rights to continue using the trademarked WINCHESTER name.
Recently, I have personally been in contact with Browning's Design & Developement group located in Morgan Utah. They contacted me for technical guidance, as they are working on resurrecting and producing a new Model 1885 single shot. I feel it is a very good choice, as the Model 1885 was John Browning's first firearm design to be mass produced by Winchester.0 -
I wasn't aware that it took a rocket scientist to figure out that the United States is no longer receptive to firearms manufacture regardless of wage rates. If you were in the gun making business, would you choose to set-up shop in a country where the courts and legislature were biased against you, subjecting you to legal fees to respond to lawsuits, etc or would you choose some country that was firearms friendly? 0
