Washington State International Kite Festival
We're off on our yearly camping week at Long Beach, Washington...
Any who stop by are welcome - will have a tent right on the beach (we are competitors) - will have a chair or two, and a few "Adult Beverages" available for any GB denizens who happen to find us. Just ask any of the competitors for the "Big Ugly Guy" , and they will send you the right way.
Just another of my (too many) expensive hobbies - this one keeps me travelling the world, and has given me many friends in many countries...it is too fun to give up in retirement.
If you are within a day's drive, the best place to stay is in Astoria, Oregon, at the foot of the bridge that takes you into Washington, at the Red Lion. Thursday and Friday are the best days to visit. On Thursday, the very best handmade kites are on display, to win their creators free rides around the world for showing their kites to the other kiting communities in next year's shows. On Friday, the competitions are in their finals for all the fighters and the special winners of Thursday are on display. Good fireworks on Friday (and Saturday) night. Don't make the dffort to come on Sunday, as it is a short day, and many Long-Distance commutes have already begun. Would be OK for a local day trip, if that is the only one in your schedule that is free.
Will be happy to give directions to some really good restaraunts if you make it to my tent.

I use to have a co-worker that travels all over for this kind of gathering. He said he has over $20K invested in kites, that was in the late 80s. 0 -

So...OK - how long are you gonna stay on the beach? got enough sandwiches, do ya figure??? maybe they won't allow "Adult Beverages" on the beach. gee, must be nice driving all around flying kites. I wish my life was that pointless. Seriously, do those friends in 'other countries' ever call you back? gonna take some pics? tell us more! 0 -
Yep, they even swap houses with us!! Recipes, too!! England is really nice, and Italy , too. Didn't like the houses in Japan, as they were too small for my Lard ass, so we stay in the better western style hotels when we go there. Thailand has some really cool places.
We don't eat sandwiches - we have a HUGE breakfast at Laurie's Breakfast House, then go to the beach, drink as many "Adult Beverages" as we can, then stagger off the beach to eat at one or the other of the GOURMET restaraunts, then have some Kiters over to swim or B.S. till we feel like we wanna go to sleep. then a few Hours later, we get up and do it over again.
Yeah, My life is pointless since I retired, at age 51. I planned it that way. All I do is have fun - whatever I fancy that day. This is year Four of my retirement - I plan to have at least as many days retired as I did working. So Far, So Good!!
Between Ham Radio, Shootin' and reloadin', Volunteer R/O at the local Gun Range, Going to the borders to do Minuteman Duty, Head-Fi, Music, Kites, Friends, Scotch Drinking, Beer-Swallerin', Cookin', Eatin', wrenchin' on Cars and trucks and Motorcycles, and generally being disorderly, I'm sometimes at a loss for fun things to do. So, I go lookin' fer somethin' to occupy my days. You got anything interesting for a Engineer that is FOREVER out of work?

I have seen the kite flyers at ocean shores litterally skiing down the sand as they are pulled by their kites.0 -
You know those Yamaha and Kawasaki lil' watercraft? I have seen a fella flying a kite skiing circles around ont of those watercraft while it was going full throttle!! The Kite-Surfer was just hitting the tops of the swells, as he was racing the SkiDoo!!

KAP, or Kiteborne Aerial Photography, is a low percentage pursuit of some of the more experienced Kiters - some have $5K panorama cameras, some have wireless video rigs, and some even hoist some really sophisticated rigs with Leicas, NIKONS, and suchlike.
I have a rig I use to take photos of friend's houses, racetracks, etc. Lots of fun.0 -
My "kite" is bigger, and has flown much higher.
