First time spotting deer in PA... Racks a plenty!
went out tonite spotting. We went in the 50 mile circuit that I have for, oh the last 20 or so years. 2 hours, 9-11, 51.0 miles. 201 deer. and no exaggeration 29 6 point or better. Most impressive? a probably 26 inch spread, 20 inch high 10 point with 1 1/2 inch beams! this boy was well over the 250# mark. and I was looking at him from about 50 feet. We saw far more 'shooters' than spikes,4's etc. We'll get out at least 3 more times before Monday's opening day.

One of the few things I miss about PA.

Is your area 3 on 1 side or 4?I'm in franklin county and haven't seen many deer period.Things don't look very good where I hunt. 0 -
3 on one side. Hoping to get out tonite too with the boys....little earlier. going to do a 'mentored hunt' with maybe both of them. (we'll see) Sunday, we;ll probably head up to our little blind on Mooody hollow, and drop some scent trail. As far as I can see, the rut is still in full swing here, starting late. Last year it was cornflake crunchy dry, and just about the time 'Boy' decided he was cold and we should go for a juant, 10 came running through. (We heard them coming for 300 yards.) a guy dropped a nice 5 point out of the bunch, and was apologizing to me for 'shooting our deer'! I told him hell, we never had a shot!. 0 -

I want to know how you measured that.[:D]0 -
Calibrated eyeballs!
Good luck, Mike. I'm going to spend most of this 4-day in the woods myself.0 -
was a guess, but we shove a lot of 1 1/2 pipe down holes...pretty good a spatial ratios......trust me on this one. (plus it appeared slightly bigger than 'poppie's deer......and he was close to those numbers. Suffice to say it is THE biggest rack I've seen in 30+ years..... 0 -
what county? I'm heading up to hunt camp Friday in Potter County. 0 -
McKean, just west of Potter.
Happy hunting!0 -
Great! Hope we do better than the last few years. It's been pretty brutal up there. Good luck hunting! 0 -
Us too, and same to you!
I keep telling Mike, spotting them is one thing, but a buck in the freezer is another.[:D]
In my opinion, the deer aren't getting any less plentiful, they are just getting smarter, as in, living nearer to homes, instead of out in the wild.
Why, just this evening, I was driving through a residential district just north of town, and I looked to my left, and there was a deer running on the road, alongside of my car.0 -
Out last night, same loop...210. (and a decent sized bear). still seeing good racks, but there were others out, and they just seem to feel the need to run them as far away as they can. (our procedure is get a good look. if they get antsy, move on, so someone else can have a shot at seein them) golden, where is your camp at in potter? pm me and I'll give you my number. possibly we'l hook up somewhere.... 0 -

I'll be heading out to Green County (below Pittsburgh) Sunday morning, out there it's 4 pts on a side or better. There apparently was an infestation of Midge
's this summer which caused some kind of disease. I don't know what to expect this year.0
