Computer records of your guns?

I keep a pencil and paper inventory of my guns. I've been paranoid about committing that information to my computer or any computer.

Do you suppose it really makes any difference?

A buddy of mine once said I didn't need to be paranoid about firearms because when the time comes to confiscate them guys with as many guns as I have will just be summarily executed, no other questions asked.

    Nah. I wouldnt be worried about it, really. They can come in and *TRY* to take them if its on paper, just as easy as they can *TRY* to take them if its in the computer. I dont think there should be a problem with it ; but, its not me.

    Someone posted a link for me before. Some free software program.

    It's really nice, user friendly and you can update it as much as you want. You can enter where you bought it, the store/person's information, price, value, even upload photos to match each of your guns.

    I used to use a spreadsheet I had made to record my information. This program is so much more in depth than that.

    I can't remember the link. Hopefully someone will be along shortly with the link.

    From what I hear, more men are worried of their Wive's finding out the true number and value of their collections than the Government getting them.

    JEEZ, think for a moment, let's see how this works.
    If you have purchased a gun from/through a FFL transfer it's already on paper, in the books etc. You fill out the form with your address and give them everything except SSN (which they [gov] can find in seconds anyway), then the dealer writes down the make model and serial # of said firearm, must keep it on file for BATF in his log book. I keep my own records and photos in case of theft as proof of ownership. So long story short its already on the books with a paper trail of previous owner, owners.
    I corrently own 2 that are not on the books as we speak cause they were purchased before the record keeping went in effect and 2 purchased form private indivuals at a flea market so the track stops at thier house.

    As much as pc's like to crash and lose all our stuff, maybe burn it
    to disc...and keep a couple backups in places away from home.

    I keep a record of ours (mine and the wife's) in a spreadsheet on a CD-RW, not on the actual PC, and update it accordingly.

    But and FWIW, as relative newbies to the world of guns, all of ours were purchased with full paperwork, credit card receipts, etc. so in reality for us the paper-and-computer trail is already a long one.

    That looks like a nice piece of software but I'll stick with the spreadsheet. I know my spreadsheet software will be supported through the next several generations of computer operating systems; that freeware probably will not be. Which means a few years down the line you'll have a database with no software to read it.

    I looked the software over and modeled my spreadsheet after it. Not as pretty or slick, but it gets the job done and I trust it for reliability.

    I too use an Excel spreadsheet. I am intimately familar with MS Excel and can set it up to do everything that the freeware program does. I have it password protected, and I lock each sheet so that only I can manipulate the data contained within each sheet.

    I also use an excel spreadsheet and put it on CD. I am paranoid about loading someone elses programs, when I am not confident of the source. Sometimes they include spyware or trapdoors. Not that I'm saying these folks are doing that, but I'm just saying....

    Bert, what is invloved with setting up EXCEL to track one's guns? I have Quattro on my old computer and I amnot real happy with it.

    I have set my records up on an excel spread sheet, but I only save it to a CD or a floppy disk. I never save it to the hard drive. I keep a copy in my safe and a duplicate in a safe deposit box.

    It sounds like your buddy is the one who is paranoid.

    Unless you buy all your guns from individuals there will be a paper trail no matter how you keep you records.

    Are you skilled with Excel? If not, it would take me much too long to explain all of the steps.

    Since the computer can be organized much neater than a pad & paper, I have my various toys listed on computerized inventories; however they are all on the PS1 that has no contact with the outside world. Conversations such as this occur on the newer computer that does more internet than anything else.
