This quote from the article is what kills me:
Fort Benning officials still want this airburst weapon, "not only to be able to shoot the enemy in defilade but to overcome soldier aim error," said Jim Stone, deputy director of Benning's Directorate of Combat Developments.
It seems that the Army is starting to act like the Air Force (I am in the AF so I can say it [:D]). The AF is looking at stopping all firearms qualification unless you are sitting in a deployable team or require weapons for your primary duty (SFS, OSI); everyone else will get JUST IN TIME (JIT) training on the M16/M4/M9 before they go out the door to the theater.
JIT DOES NOT WORK! PERIOD! Because I shoot regularly with an AR15 I am very proficient and qualify easily when I have to, but it is scary to watch most of the others on the range with you. For many it is possibly the first time they have handled a firearm in 5 or 6 years.
We have forgotten the old adage that every man (person) is a rifleman. Teach them to shoot. Teach them to be comfortable with their weapon. Teach them to hit what they aim at. Teach them to do it with one shot...not 20.
Personally I would like to see them bring back the 7.62 NATO in the M14 configuration. I saw many Marines and some Army types using it when I was in Iraq in 03, 05 and 06. I would loved to have had that instead of my M4.0 -

You need to check your info, because they're actually doing just the opposite.
In years past, USAF was only responsible for the perimeter and internal defense of their bases, with Army or USMC units providing area patrols outside the wire. USAF's area of responsibility now includes the entire area around their installations, in addition to running their own convoys.
Due to these changes in doctrine basic trainees are now being issued M16's upon arrival at BMT, the length of which is being increased by over 30% within the next few months to 43 duty-days (compared with the Army's 45 duty-days). This is being done specifically to allow for more extensive field and weapons training. USAF Security Forces, being the primary ground force, will continue to attend their 13 week training program that includes further weapons training.
As for what goes on at your permanent duty station, local commanders were previously allowed to set weapons training cycles for their non-Security Forces/PJ/CCT/TACP people based upon local needs. In other words, weapons training was often infrequent for many AFSC's. It may take awhile, but your local units will catch up with the curve based on new AFI's that address this issue.0 -

wow... they changed the gas system on the M4, big deal, there have been civilian conversion kits to do that for years now.
Leitner Wise sells some, and Kurts Kustom Firearms was developing a system, which was sent to leitner wise for testing.
Kurt claims they stole his design, but whatever, its not like H&K have done anything new or revolutionary by replacing the gas system.
Heck, if the military allowed it, an individual soldier could buy the conversion kit and convert it himself0 -

The Ranger had a badly stuck case. The cause of this failure was most likely either a broken extractor, a split/seperated case or a dirty chamber. Blaming this malfunction on the rifle's gas system is like saying a flat tire ws caused by low fuel.
The convoy troop repeatedly suffered a malfunction where the rifle fired, ejected and stripped a fresh round from the magazine, but the bolt's forward movement would stop with the round only partially chambered. As described, it sounds like this soldier's malfunction was due to insufficient maintenance. Lack of lubrication, a filthy rifle or a weak recoil spring will cause this to happen.0 -

I think their point is just that, the new rifle does not get nearly as dirty and does not wear out parts nearly as fast, thus not needing as intensive a maintenance schedule. As for the Ranger, again, having to keep the gun clean in the middle of a gun fight is not a good thing. And it getting dirty could be the reason it did not eject.0 -

Txs...trust me they are teaching them stuff in BMT, but they are starting the first steps to stopping training for the routine NON-DEPLOYERS until they get tasked. Still on AD in the AF and our base is discussing the requirements as we speak to make this happen. 0 -

The best line is where the fellow talks about how it would cost a huge amount of money to switch over to the new rifle: 1 billion dollars. Hey, aren't we spending that A DAY over there. The Iraqis blew up a $300 million dollar ammo dump. Hell, that's 1/2 a B2 bomber. If it's a significantly better weapon and if it only costs 1 billion to totally outfit the military, I say do it.
Oh, and about all those M4's and M16's that they'll be getting rid of. At $500 a pop, I'd buy three!0 -
Its worth getting an account on falfiles.com just to read the story of Ol Dirty, the FAL who has eaten over 12,000 rounds, has a broken gas piston, and still keeps on going. Only cleanings have been 2 quick trips thru a mud puddle 0 -
I went overdue on my M-16 requirement. Went to the training manager and they told me that I would only be trained if I were to deploy in the next 90 days. It has already been 2 years since I have held an m-16. I don't own one, as many of you do, so I feel that I may be at a loss in time of trouble. Tha last time was Bagram, 2005. I do work in aircraft maint., but damn, gotta be familiar just in case.[V]. I left for the last one with 2 days notice.

Very interesting indeed. Put H&K pictograms on a Rock River AR, and charge double for it. Of course, it doesn't have the modified gas system, and...oh yeah...it's not a real H&K.
