I rode w/Bikers for many years and I can say that in my experience, this is not the norm.
The 1%'s will stomp the crud out of you IF you mess w/them. But I've never known anyone to take offense at a compliment on his bike.
Sounds like "wanna-be" bikers to me.
What part of the country was this in?

gotta agree with ya on that, or something else was cookin
never wore colors, but knew a lot as we were one of only two gas stations near the bike club when they had the big bashes.
the first chop i ever rode belonged to a pagen, with a fork length of about eight feet!
and as long as you didnt rat their club or start something they were all usually cool as hell

I'm thinkin', based on the update, that the bikers probably thought you were jumping in on the doofus' victim's side.

Regardless, that's a no-win situation. Even if you had been legally carrying and didn't have anything on your record but rescuing kittens and feeding the homeless, you'd surely end up having to explain to a judge why you were playing Super Cop.

Heck, I'm guessing most departments tell their people that if they're in such a situation off-duty, to not jump in but back out and call the cavalry.

About the only thing I would've done differently is that after calling the cops I would've hung around outside of the blast radius to give the officers my account after they calmed things down.

P.S. I've also found that humor works better than insults!

Even without the full story, Ben, you did the right thing. You did your best to de-escalate a situation that was no fault of your own. It was the other guy (who turned out to have insulted somebody) that was responsible for turning them against him.

OOpps, I told him 4 last night on the phone. The other 2 must be on main street? Close to dead horse?

Glad you got an update on what happened.

damn, that's a lot of bars. what's the approximate population of that town, and how is it that we drove through there without me noticing any?

    don't answer that last question.[8)]

I figured there was more to the story.
And even tho Bikers "colors" are a sacred thing to them, accidentally touching one wouldn't normally be a reason for a stompin. But rather a warning.
My guess is the guy got mouthy after his warning.
Funny side story. Just out of hig school, myself and 2 buddies rented a Houston town house apt. Our 1st times living on our own, this place was Party Central 7 nights a week.
We had lived there about 2 weeks when one nite a heavily tatood, long bearded man in his underwear burst thru the back door and annouced.
"If you people don't shut the * up, I'm going to come back and kill ALL OF YOU!"
Most of our friends left immediately and we didn't make a sound above a whisper the rest of the night.
The next day he came back. Turned out he lived next door. Worked on the off-shore oil rigs (2 weeks on-off) and was a Mongol.
Turned out to be a VERY cool guy who became a good friend.

I'll check the pop. sign next time I roll threw.
If you came in from the south you had to pass 2 to get to the one your were at. Both right before the stop light. Most the others are on main street which was just around the corner from where you were. [:D][;)]
