Good book by Clancy. Anyone else read it? I'm on round 2.

Who's read it? I've read it once already, but I'm re-reading it. I think it's quite possibly one of the best military fiction books ever written. 0 -

I'm surprised so many folks like him since he (a) criticized the war in Iraq, (b) said not to judge Islam by the actions of a few mad men, and (c) to my knowledge is not a veteran.
I guess it's possible for someone who wasn't there and didn't do that to have a say on military stuff after all, eh?0 -

He knows more than a little, that's for sure (including how to write a good book,) but he doesn't know everything.[;)]0 -

Hell, I think he writes some pretty good stories and a lot of military, both active and former, like the man on a personal level. I just find it a bit surprising that a war critic, "terrorist lover" and "damned civilian" aka "armchair general" would get anything other than damnation around these parts.0 -

I first read The Hunt for Red October (1st edition, Published by the Naval Institute Press which I still have) while actually hunting Soviet submarines in a VP48 P-3C aircraft. Later, while in VP50, I read Red Storm Rising while loitering off the coast of Wrangel Island in the Artic Ocean.
Clancy was always a good read during the Cold War.[;)]0 -
I think the quality of his writing has declined over th last ten or so years.

Got transit time to onstation. Once flew 6.5 hours to spend about an hour onsta and 6.5 hours back to base. We would always man up our stations about 30 minutes prior to engaging in ASW operations. My position was Ordnance and starboard aft observer.
We also would play cards, cook, sleep, or work on gear.0 -

I lost all respect for Clancy when he put out that "Submarine" book and tried to pass it off as non-fiction!
His other books were pretty good reads though.0 -

The difference is, Clancy has not made it his life's mission to criticize the president, Iraq, make excuses for terrorists and the broader culture that breeds them, camped out in front of Bush's house in Texas as an anit-war publicity stunt, made fanciful claims about military strategy when he is completely and utterly ignorant of the matter (even if he has never served in uniform, he is an acknowledged expert on military matters), called for Bush's impeachment, appeared anti-Semitic, spouted ridiculous and soft-headed conspiracy theories, habitually and instinctively coddled our enemies, compared terrorists to American Minutemen, sought to undermine the foreign policy of the administration, contributed to terrorist front organizations, minimized terrorist atrocities, claimed 9/11 was America's fault, used "the troops" as a convenient and hypocritical rhetorical battering ram against the president, called for retreat and surrender of the battlefield to our enemies, urged accomodation and "political solutions" in a hard-fought war, claimed incessantly and without respite that we are defeated and that the war is unwinnable, accused our troops and president of "war crimes," or any of the other things that I and many, many other members find so distasteful and reprehensible.0 -

Red Storm Rising is one of his better books. That was the first book of his I read, 20 or so years ago. Once his books became a Jack Ryan soap, I lost interest. 0 -

He puts out a lot of books with other writers lately. I don't think he does much of the writing in them. I bought one and couldn't believe how bad it was. I love his work when it's just him.0 -
I read it and really enjoyed it. I like most all of Clancy's stuff, at least the older stuff; PATRIOT GAMES, CLEAR AND PRESENT DANGER, HUNT FOR RED OCTOBER, etc. 0 -
My wife owns a used paperback bookstore or what some people call a book exchange,,she has a large collection of Clancy books,I read alot of the spy type stuff she gets in,that type stuff hardly moves off the shelf,,now a vampire romance novel she cant keep enough of,,the things women read [8)] 0 -

Funny, I came up across someones posting once, it said something along the lines of: I am a big reader, though I mostly read the Bible and don't read much of anything else. [:D]0 -

The best part was that I always got an autographed copy as each book came out. [8D]
A small piece of trivia...He was always big on playing in the stock market and his wife was a nurse. Notice these same sort of elements in Jack Ryan's life?0 -
Lets not forget W.E.B. Griffin and his "The Corps" series. I digest books via unabridged tapings. (My preference).
I endeavour to complete the series. Haven't yet.
Getting back to Clancy, the movies are a tad off story line. Generally disappointing. Best, Joe0
