308 Winchester

I read an article in North American Hunter magazine about the 308 Win. I was very impressed and was looking into buying for my son to hunt Mule deer with. I just wanted a second opinion and wondered what make and model would be good at a decent price range.

    If you want function over looks, look for an NEF HandiRifle. can be had for app. $200. Can be rebarrelled to another caliber for less than $100. Have two, and love them. Single shot doesn't suit some, but I love 'em. If not that, Savage makes a great shooting rifle, and the Stevens (discount Savage) makes their rifle in 308. Only real difference is the Stevens doesn't have the accu-trigger. But both shoot really well.

    I have a Howa 1500 in .308 that is a fine rifle. If I were buying today I would pick up a Savage with Accutrigger.

    308 is probley the most well rounded cartridge out today (well maybe after the 30-06). Every manufacturer makes a rifle in 308 so all you have to do is to find one you like inside of your price range. As stated by the others you can start out with a new rifle in 308 for $200, and you can go upwards to an excess of $10,000 for a custom tactical rifle. So what is your budget?

    That is a fine caliber. A 30-06 is better and can be loaded down to the 308 levels to reduce recoil is necessary.

    Unless you intend on using 200gr or larger bullets the 308 is better in every other way over the Oddsix.

    For the out of the box money the Savage with the accutrigger is the most bang for the buck and changing barrels is not a big deal like most guns.

    there is far more variation in ammo for 308 over any other cartridge.

    Look at the Winchester model 88's. they are clip fe lever action and you can still get a good deal on a .308 caliber.

    45 years ago my lay-away birthday present was a Rem 700Adl 308. At the time it listed for $114.95 but we got it at discount for $97. That was my first high power rifle. Since that time I've owned, shot, or used many, many more rifles, including the prestige ones like the pre-war, pre-64 Winchesters, Weatherbys, Brownings and others, but that little 308 has been with me on trips to Alaska, across the continental US, and for about 15 years has served as my high power, centerfire rifle for my hunter education students, about 50 per year. It's handled all that use and abuse without a glitch and is worth more today than my dad and I paid for it in 1962. There are a lot of calibers and models around, but as a go to rifle, particularly as a first high power rifle for most North American game, I can hightly recommend a Remington, either the newer Model 7, or the standby Model 700 in 308.
