vehicle GPS units-opinion poll
Now I know none of you ever get lost, but...
I have been thinking about buying one of those vehicle GPS units with turn-by-turn directions. My wife and I often travel to out of town schools for sports events to watch our kids.
I would like any experiences, good or bad but only from your own experience. Tell me what you like or don't like or what positives or negatives you have related to individual units. I am looking at the lower end of the scale say $250 to $400 or so.
If you have heard about specific problems with a company or specific model, I would be interested in that as well.
I have been looking at the Tom-Tom One as a starting point.

I now own 4 Garmin units. They have excellent products, fantastic customer support, and are the number 1 leader in the industry so I won't have to worry about getting map updates for an old unit in the future. They continue to offer full support on discontinued models in unit software updates and service. I won't own anything but a Garmin!

Garmin is a good Gps,
I have a 60csx and the only
issue I have is that they only
accept Garmin topo maps
not 3rd party. They'll accept
the waypoints from another system
but not the 1:24 topos.
maybe I don't need the extra detail

In my experience Garmin DOES NOT support map updates for older models. 0 -
I can't remember the model number (and it's in my Jeep now, raining outside, and I don't want to go look [:p]), but I have an older (2-3 years old) Garmin unit. Love it! Still has the b&w screen, doesn't talk to me, but shows me where I'm at, where I've been, and where I'm going. I love it! Keeps track of all kinds of stuff (miles traveled, avg. speed, etc). If I could afford a newer unit, I would go back with a Garmin. 0 -
The problem with GPS units is that, after a thermonuclear airburst, the EMP will fry them.
That will not happen with paper maps. Also, the paper one's batteries never run out at worst moment.

if you have a laptop, buy the Delorme gps with map software. Got mine on sale for $80 and it will do everything the high end stuff will and I have a 15+ inch screen. Voice commands both ways...."are we there yet?" 0 -
I've got the Tom-Tom 910 in my truck, and used a Garmin on my boat. The Tom-Tom has been great, and on a couple of long trips, has cut off quite a bit of time from the way I would have normally gone using a map. 0 -
I have/had delorme, now I have Garmin.
I have a C340 and they are discontinued, you can get a really good price on them.
Now they add stuff like blackberry, blueberry, and all kinds of stuff that you don't need to pay for.0 -
Two Garmins and two Magellans. The Garmins are easier to use, but they lose lock up on the satellites.
Magellans have never lost a lock up, but are slightly more difficult to use.
It's a toss up.0 -
I have the Alpine in my truck But to much $ for most
GPS/Onstar/CD/AM/FM/lowjack and anything else you wish add to the system.0 -
Mine sometimes works, sometimes not, but for less than ten bucks, you take your chances. [xx(]

Tom Tom One is rated a best buy by Consumer Reports. Based on that I bought one and it ROCKS. 0 -
I've heard they are great, and that the ones you bolt to your dash get stolen like crazy. Like car stereos, radar detectors, and ipods all lumped together. 0 -

I saw a magellan demonstrated at gander mountain. It was neat but about $700.
I noticed that Tom-Tom's have a 2 year warranty.
I always liked the garmin stuff I've used so it is kind of a toss-up so far.0 -
Get a refubed Garmin quest 2. $365 and you can take it anywhere. 0 -
Saw some neat Pionier units today at best buy that replace your radio.
Besides radio and CD player they have an automatic slide out Nav screen from 6-7".
I need to learn more about them.0 -
I got a Magellan 360 a couple years ago for about $350 and it is great in every way, except yesterday I drove out into a newly roaded housing develpment and it got confused, but it still knew where we were, just wondered why I was driving cross-country. But for going places you aren't familiar with, it's great!! 0
