Hog Hunting with an AR-10
Had a late evening hunt with a little success. 8:30 PM in a dark swampy thicket. 75 yards. Decent boar. 150# on the scale.
Heart shot. Little scary going in the thicket looking for him in total darkness. Caliber used .308.
Going again tonight. I saw lots of deer very close in the dark.
You can't hunt past 6:30 without the night vision.

Very nice kill Topkick. AR-10 is a fine weapon. Our Military needs to toss out the 223 cal and go with 308. BTW - I like the night scope you are sporting there.
Seeing that photo reminded me of a friend's hog hunt several years ago. This guy went out late one afternoon to hunt hogs with an AMT 22 mag. That was his first mistake (22 mag). After wounding a sow and 2 piglets he had to climb a tree and accidently dropped his pouch with cell phone, ammo and extra mags. He still had the gun but it was empty by now. The Sow squealed so much that she had an amry of hogs at the base of his tree for over 2 hours until concerned friends located him and came to the rescue.
He didn't want to tell what happened, but by all the obvious evidence, he had to "fess up".0 -

It is scary tracking a hog at night. One night I was tracking a wounded hog in the Oconee River swamps in Georgia. Very faint blood trail, about one drop of blood every five feet.
I was on my hands and knees with the .45 Colt. My pal Bud was right beside me, on his hands and knees, with the flashlight. John was right behind us, walking, he had the .35 Marlin lever action.
Took us about an hour to get to the hog, we were nervous. I fired twice, and my Colt jammed. Bud held the light on the twisting, screaming hog. I yelled, "John, shoot him with your Marlin! John! John?"
He was gone. John had lost his nerve a few minutes earlier, gone back to the car and hopped in and locked the door.0 -

We lived in a small town. Everybody knew everyone else.
Bud and I were such nice guys that we never told a soul about John's cowardice, so nobody else knew. Honestly, he would have been called a coward to his face for decades, if we had told.
On the other hand, we never took John hog hunting again.0 -

Going again in an hour. There is a hog problem here and we got another invite today at the co-op from a rice farmer to thin the herd.
They are tearing up the rice fields.
There are herds of twenty to thirty in his fields at night rooting out the plantings.

Topkick, I wish I could come down to Texas and help y'all out with those hogs. I am in the NC mountains now, not many hogs around here.

It's a Night Optics scope.
About $3,500, Third Generation 4X.
8:30 is pitch dark with some moonlight.
It was cloudy though. I can identify individuals at 500 yards....at midnight. It's unreal!
Normally, with my regular rig, it's over at dusk.
The pigs go nocturnal when it's hot- and it's 85 degrees here today and very humid as I'm near the S. Texas coast.
You can smell these hogs before you see them.
When walking thru the dark back to the truck, you hear them running the woods beside you. Very freaky!
I made the shot at 75 yards thru the heart.
You can see moon shadows like it was 12:00 noon.
Try that with a Leupold!
Deer don't show up real good- too tan. They blend with the grass.
Saw a lot though real close. Very cool.
Black/red hogs show up like black rockets running thru the brush.
Put hunting like this on your to-do list.0 -

Topkick, that sounds like some great hunting. Hogs running near you in the moonlight like black rockets, deer running around.
I hope you have a big freezer.
Have you tried any of that pork on a smoker? I mean the electric ones that take about 8 hours to cook a shoulder. Man that is the living end.
Plus, you have the mesquite right there. We pay $4 for a three pound bag of mesquite in the grocery store.0 -
I picked up a 6.5" S&W Performance Center 500 Mag last year and was considering hog hunting with it. Am I nuts, would you recommend a rifle instead? 0 -
An Ar would be just the nuts for hogs. 0 -
The 500 would certainly be enough gun.
Depends how close- Not for power, but for aiming ability.
The kill zone is crucial as they are tough beasts.
Also, high grass obscures the target as the grass in the thickets is about 18" high.
I would use a scope for the precision nessessary.
If you use a handgun, get close.
It's much easier with a scoped rifle, in my experience.
The handgun shots I've taken were tough running shots that I don't like. They were opportunity shots, usually during work in the fields or building stands or fence work.
Smoked pork is the bomb!
And I like the sausage a lot.0
