Truck question?

My 1976 Fords driver side door has to be slammed very hard in order for it to shut correctly. Is there anything I can do to smooth this??

    Remove it from the hinges.[:D][:o)][:p][:0][B)]

    Actually you should be able to realign it at the hinges.

    Yes, the striker in the door frame will losen up with a torx bit and can be adjusted up/down or in/out. The door hinge pins are probably worn. Open the door about half way, grab the rear of the door and see if you can lift it up and down.

    What MT357 said, the door striker is muffed up, this happens from slamming doors too hard.

    Once you do this, if the hinge pins are tight, and the striker is ok, it may be rusted out "behind" the hinges, in the body. Usually the bottom hinge. The door will continue to get worse. Had a 73 that got so bad, we had to use bungee cords, to hold the door shut. Good think we lived in the boonies. [;)]

    Or if none of the above is true. You've had someone swinging on the door. Realign with a 2x4.

    I had a 59 ton and a half stakebed that was like that. Bandag caps, Big ol winch on the front bumper with grease bout an inch thick on it. Had to tie both doors shut. Never had any trouble with getting blocked in at the local watering hole with that bruiser though. (for some reason nobody would park near it.) [:0]
    Did have a couple of "ladies" that balked at riding in it though. [B)]

    Place a KIA into the hinge area and slam door shut. Removed crushed KIA and close door to see if door is now adjusted properly.

    It's not in the hinges, you can't adjust the hinges as they are welded on (I think all cars). It is the strike plate which removes with a star head wrench usually (see above).

    Those older rigs had bolt-on hinges and there is some adjustment avilable in them. You may need to remove the front fender to access the body to hinge bolts.

    Open your door and try lifting up on the corner of the door. If there is play, your problem might be the hinge pins. You can buy replacement pins and bushing at an auto parts store. You will have to remove the hinges to to install the new pins and bushings. Its not that hard.

    Or you can take a floor jack and lift the bottom back corner of the door. Torque it a little to raise the latch back up. Not the best advice but I has worked in the past.

    1)Take the doors off, put on a old tennis net to cover the door opening.
    2) Put a NASCAR sticker on the hood & tailgate.

    Use a floor jack to to hold doors up while you adjust the "bolted hinges", by loosing the screws in the hinge on the firewall.
    Move em around, test closing, re-try again, it takes a few stabs to get it right.

    Hinge pin kits with bushings are from $19.95 to $99 depends on where you get them it is easy, a pain in the rear, but do able.
