Tell me about life in Amarillo and Dallas Tx.
I'm looking into a job (I believe they are going to make me a job offer) that would have me here in Florida for one to two years working mostly here and doing some traveling in the southern states. When the two years is up the company would more than likely want to relocate me to either Amarillo or Dallas. I've never been to Amarillo and I've only spent one, rainy weekend in Dallas, which I did enjoy. But if I was going to be living and working in one of those cities I'd like to know what normal life is like, cost of living, and all that stuff. I would more than likely end up in Amarillo than in Dallas.

I work in Dallas. I would suggest living north of Dallas in the suburbs though. Cost of living is about the norm. No state income taxes, and land is appreciating.
Amarillo is about 3 hours west. Not as much to see or do. Weather is much colder and icy in the winter. Hunting is good, only a short drive. Land will be MUCH cheaper, but you will buy a lot of fuel in case you need to go get food or auto parts from a larger city.
I live in Ft. Worth but drive to Dallas every day for work. Nearly 30 years or so. Texas has great hunting, shooting ranges, good highways, and some good lookin' women for sure.

Dallas is apart of what is called the MetroPlex. Dallas proper is a large city of over 1 million people. There are many many bedroom communities that support Dallas. Grapevine, The Colony, Arlington, Many people live in Ft Worth and commute to Dallas. From the far west side of Ft Worth to the Far east side of Dallas is about 80 miles. Dallas is not one of my favorfite places to live but i do have some very good friend that do live there. In the summere the heat can get above 100 degrees and have 100% humidity with it cooling down at night to 98 degrees.

Amarillo, in the winter, is colder than a woman's heart.....Dallas' corrupt politics/government and police rival those found in New Orleans.....If you have kids, you'd be better off throwing them down a well than sending them to Dallas schools..... 0 -
Dallas traffic sucks!
Too many liberal Yankees have destroyed DFW.
A gillion peole live in the suburbs and smaller towns, all come into DFW for work.
A 80 to 200 round trip drive to work is not uncommon, nor is the 2-3 hours or more in driving time.
Denton, Sanger, Valley View & Gainesville are nice little towns with goods schools and less crime problems.0 -

I have spent more time in Dallas than in Fort Worth, but Fort Worth is smaller, friendlier, and easier to navigate. Dallas and the surrounding area is almost totally populated by transplanted Yankees.
I live an hour east of Dallas. Lots of people around here commute to Dallas to work. Not what I would want to do, nor would I want to live in Dallas proper, nor in the so-called suburbs.
I have been to Amarillo once. Nice country, but harsh in winter.
Given the choice of the two, I guess I would work in Dallas, mainly because of familiarity, but I wouldn't live there. I wouldn't find the suburbs to the north desirable, either. Try east in Rockwall or Hunt County, or south in Kaufman County. I would avoid Collin, Tarrant, and Denton Counties, mainly because of population growth and density.0 -

In a relative way yes. In general the north is wealthier than the south and cities are cleaner. There might be cockraoches in SD, there probably are. I have never seen one though.
Where I am recommending moving there are no major cities. The biggest city here is 130,000. I just am not one for big populations of people and all the crap which goes with it. I admit there are low population areas in the south but they are few and far between Dallas has more people in it than do some northern states like SD, ND,MT,WY. With the heat, humidity, lack of winter, and large population you couldn't get me into the south to live again.0 -

There are no cockroaches or crime in Sheridan, Orygun. Housing is very reasonable. There is no sales tax and you have to to let an attendant pump your gas. The weather is always moderate and we reserve one week a year for snow, sometimes two. There is a handy Federal Prison nearby. No shooting ranges, but I shoot everything, up to and including Weatherby Magnums in my back yard. Hunting in my yard - Black bear, Elk, Bobcats and Cougar, Deer, ducks, geese, squirrel, bunnies, horses and cows. Lots of varments, from coyotes on down. Many very nearby rivers, lakes and streams, with plenty of fish from King Salmon, trout and bass, to crawdads.
The women, however are uniformly ugly, which may be an upside for your significant other.
Have your new company move you to Sheridan, Orygun.

I don't know a thing about Armarillo.
it has been said that the boudary between Dallas and Fart Worth is like where Texas is split in half. after hearing that, I saw they were right.
dallas is like the rest of the eastern half of the state, flat as a board, when ppl from the east move in they move there not fort worth, it can get very cosmopolitan, more crime, there are more thugs but it seems if you leave them alone they won't bother you, lots of jobs, great economy, cost of living is less than what you would expect, traffic is thick but moves pretty good, great for networking business associates, anything you want to buy is there somwhere, any job you want to do is there somewhere, night life is ok, not too much activities to do in town, and wouldn't want to raise kids there. houses don't have basements but you still pay as much.
fart worth is like the rest of the western half of the state, the hills start there, when ppl from the west come in that's where they move in, not dallas, less crime than dallas anyways, jobs are ok, whatever you want to buy you can get it from Dallas if it isn't there, and it definitely has a western "feel" to it.
both of them have plenty of restaurants, 12 lakes within a 1/2 hour drive, crawling with hot chicks (but they're sweeter in fort worth), and if you're a caucasian, you'll feel like you're a minority. there are more Africanos and Mexicans, and them along with the Indians and Orientals, you'll defintely notice it. not being biased, but it's a weird feeling you'll have to get used to.

Dallas county sucks, WAY overrun with urbanite yankees {no offence to the yanks on GB}but these yanks are yuppie type dooshbags. They come down here for whatever reason but complain because we do stuff differently then they DID BACK HOME. 0 -

I lived in Wichita Falls for a year, and went up to Amarillo a time or two. Man, it gets cold there! I thought Wichita Falls was cold, but Amarillo gets a lot colder.
I live in Central Texas, about 140 miles from DFW, close to Ft. Hood -- it does get hot here, but I can take the heat easier than the cold weather. The good news is it doesn't get real cold usually, and if it does it doesn't last long. My last winter in Tennessee it got 18 below zero and stayed below zero for a week; I was gone by spring!0 -

I typically stay away from the stockyard steakhouses.
Overpriced tourist traps, ya know?
However, Cattleman's is OK.
Del Frisco's -ripoff.
I like Tejas de Brazil a lot. Lunch is 1/2 price of dinner same menu. Around $30 a plate.Lots of beef,beef,and more beef.
Go here. For lunch. Outstanding.
The Mexican restaurants in the area are very good too.0
