Mackinac Island
I have 4.5 days off between shifts. Mrs Plaid is still off from hernia surgery. We could go south and see her family in St. Louis. [|)]
We are also considering Mackinac Island. Never been there. Don't know what is there, but people say it's good. Anything else in Michigan worht going to for a few days?
My sister and family live in Battle Creek. I guess we would have to stop by.

Mackinac Island - do it. You'll be glad you did!
One of the great things about Mackinac Island is that there are no cars there - only a very few emergency vehicles permitted. You have to get there by jet boats.
Google it.
The place is very much untouched for about the last 100 years, or so. See the fort while you are there - very, very interesting tour/demonstration of how soldiers were back in the 1870's.
The Grand Hotel is the other big attraction there - the big Christopher Reeve movie -Somewhere in Time (1980) - was filmed there.

My wife is from Northern Mich. She says that one day she wants to take me to Mackinac Island. BTW, did you know it was the setting for the Christopher Reeves ( AKA Superman) movie " Somewhere in time"/ 0 -
Yes I too would say go and visit the Island if you have the time. Very relaxing and always interesting. The Forts are always a big draw for me. One on the Island and one at the south end of Mighty Mackinac bridge.
As for the rest of the sate its festival season as like many other places. Church and small town mostly, Some with extra attactions this weekend like the power boat races in St.Clair along the St.Clair river.0 -
I feel like I own a part of that bridge. I crossed it so often and paid the toll during my four year tour at Kincheloe AFB in the upper penn between 1960-64.
Mackinac Island was right off the bridge to the East coming south across the bridge. Very neat place. Worth the visit.

Make a trip to the upper penninsula and see Taquamanan Falls, the Soo locks and Picture Rock. You won`t regret it,it`s beautiful country. 0 -
I live only about 25 miles from the island. The Soo locks are really neat if things like that interest you. Indian River has the world's largest crucifix. Dont forget to take a long look at the Mackinac Bridge. The island is different no cars just horses and bicycles. Be sure to tour the forts both on the island and Mackinac City.If time permits Mill Creek sawmill is neat to see. It's just a few miles from Mackinac City. 0 -

If you are going to be in southern Michigan, swing through Frankenmuth. Its a Bavarian themed town and really beautiful. Next door is Birch Run with about a million outlet stores. Also in Birch Run is Tony's, a restaurant whose claim to fame is giving you obscene amounts of food. Good food too. 0 -
I lived there for 2 years. It's quite beautiful with lots to do and see. No cars allowed, just horses and bikes. Make sure that you cross the bridge and take the ferry over from St. Ignace. Lots to do in northern Michigan you'll have a nice time. Instead of staying at the Grand Hotel, you may want to consider Stone Cliff. It's a hotel set in a wooded area further up on the bluff.

(As an aside)
Frankenmuth, MI also has the BIGGEST CHRISTMAS STORE on the planet! You can easily get lost in it - it's a great place to OD your wife/GF if she is into Christmas shopping! Gale almost had a breakdown after only an hour in there!
Put it on your list of things to see!

One of my memories of Mackinac Island was watching a cop with a radar gun hiding behind a tree at the foot of the long hill by the Grand Hotel, trying to catch kids peddling down the hill on bikes, exceeding the island's 25 mph speed limit. 0 -

That sounds about right, you could get going pretty fast down Grand Hill. When I lived there and a guy took a girl out on a date he would pick her up on his bike, riding her on the handle bars/basket. The cops would harrass us for it all the time. In retrospec it was pretty dangerous.0 -

The store is named Bronner's, and it is something worth spending some time in once or twice.[:)]0 -

That is correct. Writes you a ticket too. You can also be arrested for drunk pedaling. Its treated just like a drunk driving in a car.0 -
Hit the Island on one day, then head up to the Soo and see the locks while the wifey shops. Watch the freighters on their way up and down the river while at Clyde's for a Big-C burger or hit the Antler to eat and see all the stuffed animals and items sold for drinks; then hit the casinos and lighthouses on your way to Taquamenon Falls. 0 -
After Tahquamenon Falls go North to Paradise and have lunch at the Yukon Inn. Then keep going to Whitefish Point. The shipwreck museum there has the ship's bell from the Edmund Fitzgerald. 0 -
My wife and I like it there. No cars (or air conditioning at the grand hotel). But all of the horse sh** makes for some nice flower gardens over there. Its nice to get away from the heat in the summer. They call the tourists FUDGIES, cause of all the fudge they buy, and dont forget about the pasties. Its where the movie "somewhere in time" was filmed (watch it before you go). Hit the falls and go see the wreck of the Edmond Fitzgerald museum. 0 -
Well now. Was just up there last week. Loaded the wife and a couple of changes of clothes on the bike and hit the road. Old friend from my Marine Corps days lives near there. I'll be back for hunting season. Was a most excellent ride up and most of the way back, except coming back through Virginia, the only place it wasn't raining was in the tunnels on I 77.
Well worth visiting.
Rode 3500 miles in 6 days. Came home with a sore butt.0 -
By the way, folks who live North of the Mackinac Bridge call themselves 'Yoopers' because they live in the U.P.(Upper Peninsula). They call anyone who lives South of(beneath) the bridge 'Trolls'. 0
