Anybody Take Statins?
I just started. Doc wants the cholesterol down. After losing weight, regular exercise, and taking "Cholest-off" for about 3 months, my total cholesterol went UP a point. Bad went down a little, and the good came up a little, but it still needed help.
My eldest sister takes statins, and when she does, she hurts so bad she can't get out of bed. I just started today, and I don't hurt.
I am just not wild about taking a drug that has all the possible side effects that these do.
If any of you take this stuff, let me know how you have fared.

I take Vytorin and it dropped my cholestrol #s down significantly.
I have been using it about a year and have not noticed any ill affects. It was the first pill I have had to take and I really wasn't to thrilled about it, but so far so good.
I told my Doc. that all those pills were poison and that all Doctors were quacks. He told me that was a fair assessment.[:)]0 -
nunn--I have a little advice for you because my father takes statins. He's on blood pressure meds and Lipitor and I don't know what else. He's fit as a fiddle too. He runs at least 3 times a week (usually three miles) and six miles on Sunday. He's at the gym the other days of the week doing some strength training. He wasn't overweight but he dropped a lot of weight over the year that I was in Iraq. He just kept his exercise regimen but cut back on food portions. He takes several vitamin supplements but he also does a couple other things that I think will help you and your sister if you experience pain from the statins. I'll get the website where you can order the stuff. In addition to taking a few tablespoons of apple cider vinegar everyday he does one other thing.
He takes a dose (I'll find out how much) of PHARMECEUTICAL GRADE cod liver oil. It's lemon flavored and doesn't stink. It's quite digestible. There is some debate but the Omega-3's are supposed to be good for the heart. Regardless, the fish oils are a natural anti-inflammatory. After about a month of doing this the pains went away COMPLETELY. My dad orders his cod liver oil online and he's not one to do online commerce so that must mean it's not available locally (Minneapolis--a big city where anything can be purchased) or it's so dirt cheap online that it's better to do it that way.
My dad is old fashined. He doesn't follow diet fads. Everything he does is under either the advisement or consent of his doctor. His heart is too big. He's the epitome of a healthy lifestyle but he's got a few health related obstacles he has to deal with. I'll call my dad tonight and ask him and then I'll post it here so other members can read.0 -
Nunn, I sold statins for a 10years in my past career. I also have taken one since I was 35 (bad genes). The benefits much outway any risk. Statins have been studied now for over 25 years in millions of patients, and have been proven to reduce your risk of heart attack and stoke immensly. Statins are now being used to lower even normal cholesterol, because lower has been proven better. Our current president had 170 cholesterol and was still put on a statin, which he remains on. Take it and live longer! The very rare (but potentially fatal) side effect that you can get called rhabdomyalisis (Muscle death) is easily monitored with a yearly liver enzyme test. 0 -
Garlic pill (blood pressure), Potassium pill (blood pressure), 2 Tbsp apple cider vinegar in a cup of water, 2 Tsp Cod Liver Oil (Iceland Health), multi-vitamin, Calcium-Magnesium supplement (make sure that the Calcium supplement contains magnesium because people who have high blood pressure are often magnesium deficient if high blood pressure pertains to you).
Ultimately, take the pharmeceutical grade Cod Liver Oil. Iceland Health has the flavored kind. My dad likes lemon. You can store the pharmeceutical grade on the shelf--no refrigeration needed.

I take them and BP meds with no problems 0 -
My MD told me that a lot of doctors take them as a preventative measure even when they don't actually need them. Seems that cost is only downside. 0 -
Been taking 10mg of Zocor for close to three years. My cholesterol has been improving with each check, and with this previous one, the doc said that my numbers were excellent (first time he said that, and prior to my taking it, I was in very dangerous territory).
The Wife is a nurse, and she confirmed that the numbers were fantastic.0 -
I was taking Niacin for a while, but always felt like I was burning up. (hot).
Can't take most of the meds due to liver problems, I've been staying off ice cream and most everything else extra that I like to eat !
I also have 6 whole cashew nuts a day, and my numbers have been getting better.0 -
I have been taking 10mg Zocor (cholesterol) and 50mg Toprol (BP) for 3 years now without any problem. 0 -
I've takem Lipitor for about twenty years. Chol was 325 when I started, got it down to normal, which took most of those years, and I still take it. I Get the liver checked every six months. So far so good.. 0 -
I've been taking Zorcor for 5 years since I was diagnosed with diabetes. I don't like taking it, but hey! I'm still alive.
Exercise will help reduce the needed dose.0
