  i just pulled out my 98, while it shape resembles it, the on in the picture looks very sharp cut compared to mine, the v shape cut is not present on mine, and mine has a more circular ring behind it

  That more closely resembles the safety for the T-Gewehr, the Germans anti-tank rifle of WWI. The T-Gewehr is a 13mm single shot.
  
  As for value I wouldn't guess, less than 16,000 of the rifles were produced. Any chance you've got a Mauser receiver or action of rather oversize proportion?
  
  Were it mine I would properly identify it before selling, could be selling a collectors wet dream for less than a buck.
