a pure boxing vs. mma? like said, the boxer must be capable of keeping the other guy off him or else he's toast. again, like said above, the 48 y.o. trainer guy does it vs. his trainees, that's how you do it... if you can.

that scenario has been played out before a few years ago. the winner was some croatian cop, kickboxer, and that's exactly what he had to do- everybody tried to take him down, nobody could, and he was good enough to win the fight on his terms. apparently not too many people can do that, or at least they aren't willing to try that approach.

the martial arts guys who teach only karate, or hapkido, or tae kwon do, or what have you, they should know you have to be able to do more than just that unless you're very very good at what you do, cuz if you get taken down you're toast. which in a real life scenario is very likely. you must be proficient in grappling.

It speaks poorly of our civilization that such a thing has enough of an audience to support it.

That was my first thought when I was exposed to UFC however I have dramatically changed my mind.

Every man likes to "test his metal" and they do so in many different ways. Some climb mountains, some box in a ring, some play football, some jog marathons, some wrestle and some compete in UFC. Is UFC any different than any of those other sports ? Some say UFC is more violent and dangerous. That couldnt be farther than the truth.
Safety - UFC has never had a serious injury in its 15 year existance. No deaths, no one paralyzed, very few broken bones. Contrast that with football where every year in America we have about 25 people die from football related injuries. We also have many more who are permanetly paralyzed. There are untold numbers of serious injuries requiring years of therapy and rehab. Broken legs, torn ligaments, concussions, and so on. Many people dont know that high school cheerleading is one of the most dangerous sports in America for injuries. UFC has actually far fewer injuries than girls cheerleading.
Barry Sanders said one of the reasons why he retired early was because he had seen many pro football players unable to play with their kids after leaving football due to injuries. Those are permanant.

Compare boxing to UFC. In boxing you have deaths every year from brain swelling and bleeding. NONE IN UFC, EVER !! Anyone who watches an old boxer today sees how they can barely speak and are almost brain dead. UFC fights many times have very few punches to the head.
Many boxers and pro athletes are criminals. Chuck Lidel has two degrees from Cal Poly. Many others are college graduates and family men. I dont know of any who are convicts.
I sometimes worry that younger people will think that UFC fighting is okay for the street. Good parents teach kids the appropriateness and outlets for these kinds of things. Just like in hockey, boxing, football and other sports.

There is no doubt UFC is taking over boxing and I hope the sport grows even bigger.

** Side Note : I just started training at a Gracie Academy and I have my first fight coming up in 2 months. Its a local event.

Yep that was when I stopped watching due to the increase in rules. He was still UFC and I'd be highly surprised if he didn't have a rapsheet.

Yes. In the initial UFC fights, I was intrigued as I got my first chance to watch Brazilian Jiu Jitsu.
These guys said that 95 percent of street fights go to ground eventually. So, they want to take their opponent to the ground as soon as possible, and then be masters of the ground.
Royce Gracie showed that the proof is in the pudding.

OJMayo- A well written defence of MMA, thank you. Keep us posted on you upcoming fight. I recently started training in my fist non-striking discipline, Judo, and I love it. I started mostly to get in shape but I'm already being encouraged to compete. I need to get out of the open (ie fat guy) weight class before I consider it.

How is it "Ultimate" fighting when they don't even allow eye-attacks, "Fish-Hooks" or Dim-Mak?

If they did that it would get too bloody and boring. When I say "fish-hook" i'm using a term from their rule book describing a particular type of attack/hold. I don't like how they mislead the fans by presenting the illusion of "ultimate" fighting.

Ultimte Fighting is a fair description. Now if it was called Thunder Dome then anything would go. [;)]

"ultimate" i guess is used as a marketing term and also because i think you could say its the most "ultimate" fighting allowed in america. many people just called it "MMA" or "cage fighting"

Liddell-v-Rampage will be a great fight but I think the fight of the night will be between Josh "The People's Warrior" Burkman (19-3-0) and Karo "The Heat" Parisyan(24-4-0).

Parisyan was next in line for a shot a Hughes until GSP took him down and now that Serra is in the way it may be a while before Parisyan gets another shot. This is a top contender match in the welterweight division and both fighter have a history of fighting hard. (Parisyan-v-Sanchez was the 2006 fight of the year).

Don't take a beer break during this one it should be a great fight.

I don't care much for Karo Parisyan Elk. He has in the past been some what inconsistant. I'll take Burkman in that one. I still say that if Chuck can rock Rampage a few times to where he can't get, or stops trying for the take down Chuck will end it with his strikes. Then again Randy Couture did in fact suceed in taking the Ice Man down more than once.

How bout Penn and Pulver? I'd like to see Pulver pull it off but my money is on B.J.

Parisyan-v-Burkman is a coin flip fight, could go either way. I'll pick Karo just becuse he is a Judo guy.

B.J. is a freak and I can't wait to see him fight Pulver. I agree the smart money is on B.J. but "Little Evil" will be looking for his last hurrah. It should be a hell of a fight.

I know I picked Rampage to win but when it came time to put money down I had to put it on The Ice Man. I still want Jackson to win but I just can't bet against Liddell.

Elk, you would rather see Jackson as champion over Chuck Liddell?

I'm going Rampage, he's got the edge on Chuck. I would rather see Rampage as the champ over Chuck.

Ya, I'm ready for Liddell to go down. Besides Shogun is going to take it from whoever is left standing from this fight.
