I hate those darn things...they are pretty thick at one of the ranges I use.

I was attacked by a swarm of the little bastids out at the shooting range. Very aggressive insect. I now bring a can of brake cleaner with me as one shot of that will drop them to the ground, provided you can hit them!

I learned as a child from my grandfather how to get id of them, when they start to swarm you, you walk real fast, then stop quick, all of them will fly past you and you just slap your hands together in front of you and you will get 3 or 4 at a time. I don't know why it works but it does.

Used to hate the little bustards when I lived in Pa. Haven't done battle with one in over 20 years. Vicious.

I have found that they seem to be drawn to movement. The more you fight them the harder they come at you. Often if I stand still they will lose interest and go away. Your results may vary.

they are one of many reason so many deer end up road kill here in WI during the summer months , those darn devils get after a deer and it will just run like crazy to get away , many times right across a road getting hit by some body thats not on the look out

Zero-tri works well, also. If you hit them while they are in the air they just do a nose dive. DEAD before they hit the ground.

    Nope, no problem with them.
    Maybe it's the altitude. [?]

This year we are plagued with
    them compared to previous years.
Don't ever remember them being an issue
in the door yard, must be due to
    all the rain

There's plenty of other pests around here. A place I was looking at over by Cripple Creek and Victor out in the mountains, man, was that overrun by all kinds of insects. Same up in Pike NF -- got out of the truck to fill up a bag for shooting stand and within minutes was almost eaten alive by all kinds of flying and biting things.

Though, around Florissant and Divide haven't seen that problem, except maybe for some mosquitoes around damp areas. Having seen anything like deer fly, thank G-d.

Little shats have a way of biting you on the back of your arm or, in my bald case, the back of the head. Really bad cases land on the back of your T shirt and try to gnaw you through the material. Only positive thing about them is that they're slow so you can usually swat and squish. Most satisfying in a very primal way.

Fugawe is a perceptive fellow, they are indeed attracted to large moving objects. Before cars and such all large moving objects contained blood which is what they need. They have no teeth, just a piercing/sucking probosis and some interesting enzymes to prevent blood clots while they feed. Fortunatly they are pretty slow fliers as flies go, so even old guys like James and I can usually get them. They do tend to gang up sometimes though. Don't see them much in the desert, so I don't know which repellents work.

Flies don't grow after they emerge from their pupal cases. They are adult and full size when we see them as flies. The growing is done in the maggot stage. Smaller flies are either smaller individuals or different species.

I do not see them around here. I think the gnats kill em. Don

A real horse fly is a different creature,..........about the size of a B-2!
Also if you squash one, what a mess.[:D]

I cannot see the photos on this computer, but deer flies are the ones with the delta wings that look like the F-102. Horse flies are dark, a good inch long with very large eyes.

You science guys might think they don't have teeth, but after you get bit you might reevaluate that finding. Next you'll be trying to tell me these damned mosquitoes don't actually carry knives.

Had it been anyone but you James I would have said I was getting bit[:D] by those things before you were born, but since only god was born before you, I guess I can't get away with that. And no, skeeters don't carry knives, land sakes old son they got West Nile virus, Dengue Fever, Viral Encephalitis, Rift Valey fever, yellow fever, Eastern Equine Encephalitis, Japanese Encephalitis, La Crosse Encephalitis, St. Louis Encephalitis, Western Equine Virus and Malaria, isn't that enough?[xx(]

Millions of the deer flies up here. Also another fly 3 sizes larger, but 1 size smaller than a horsefly called a moose fly. A moose fly will take a very large chunk out of your arm or back of your neck when they bite. I use my 41mag as a defense against them. [}:)]

Just stopping by on my way back to the experts forum....Reference pesty bugs...If you have the time, down a bottle of tonic water approx. one hour before you venture out . The quinine in the drink is offensive to bugs, and fewer to none will be buzzing around you. It's part of my barbecue ritual. Best, Joe
