    Good choice. Kubuntu is my preference, but if GNOME does it for you, it ain't bad either. Well, shout if you run into issues, though you probably can find most help online.

    i'm still a linux newbie, what is the difference between unbunut and kubuntu?

    i guess gnome does it for me, although my buddy recomended KDE

    some pretty cool graphical effects, this one paints a well animated fire graphic on my screen, the screenshot sucks, but live it looks pretty cool.

    Ubuntu uses Gnome, which is built using GTK framework as it's default X "shell" so to speak, Kubuntu uses KDE, which was built on QT, another framework.

    QT (what KDE is built on) is a more stable and cleaner however might appear as heavier API. As a developer, I prefer QT, and as an end-user I prefer KDE. I know things change fast and I haven't looked at Gnome and GTK recently, it might have gotten better, but I just don't see that they have reworked hundreds of thousand of line of code in 3-4 years.

    You can always painlessly install KDE on your Ubuntu and choose it, KDE, to be your default X window manager, and that's it. It's just a shell.

    Now, Beryl and Compiz, the two managers, which have been split and now remerged again, have all those nifty features are a whole different story. Good looks but are somewhat a PIA to work with if you want a stable desktop. I mess around with them when I am bored but if I need something that I can use for work, I don't use it.

    Yup. There's a ton of toys :)

    I wish someone took time to clean it all up and make a decent desktop and something like Parallels. A few good games wouldn't hurt it either.

    i guess saying that i am a linux newbie is understating things, the last computer i had was running windows 98, and slllloooowlly at that. i've never had much need for a computer, but now that i'm back in school really need to catch up.

    i've been reading so much about linux these last couple days, my brain is swelling, i need to go to the range...

    as soon as someone does find a way to market linux as an alternative to windows, i don't see why everyone wouldent use it. the reign of windows is coming to an end, even someone like myself can see that. but even with ubuntu, a fairly simple, user friendly distro, i have had to work through a few problems that should have been solved by the developers. but even stil, not many people have even heard of linux.

    also, how the hell do these linux distros make any money?

    You'd be surprised if I told ya. Windows isn't going anywhere, it's so entrenched that it would take a work of a titan to get it out of businesses and people's heads. Linux distributions -- and there's a ton -- aren't anywhere close to being a good marketable solution to desktop or server needs, and aren't getting any closer. Why? There's a ton of reasons. Why nobody would jump in and make a good commercial product? Dunno, matter of time maybe, who knows. How they make money -- support for corporate customers, donations, so on. IBM, Dell, Intel all donate. It's slowly growing. There're better OS's out there, Mac OS X, for instance, but, God forbid Apple opens it up to foreign hardware. Anyways, OS woes have been raging since PC was "invented" and I don't see any end in sight, unless you have connections in Menlo Park with some fat VC that will shell out a few mil for a development project [;)]
