WASHINGTON, May 22 - Congressional Democrats relented today on their insistence that a war spending measure sought by President Bush also set a date for withdrawing troops from Iraq. The decision to back down, described by senior lawmakers and aides, was a wrenching reversal for some Democrats, who saw their election triumph as a call to force an end to the war. A Democratic effort to include timelines prompted Mr. Bush's veto of the original bill last month, producing a political impasse.

This is a big defeat for the Dems, at least for today.
But in the long run, it spells disaster for the Republicans and Bush.
Had the Dems succeeded in puttinh in dates for troop withdrawal, then when the troos were withdrawn, and the situation in Iraq went to crap, the Dems would get the blame.
Now, the Dems will say, "We gave the President all the money he asked for. We funded the war. Iraq has gone to hell and it is Bush's fault."
It is political cowardice, but it is very politically smart, for the Dems to play it this way.
Meanwhile, as Bush and the Dems play politics, American boys continue to die for nothing. Just like Vietnam in 1970.0 -
You're right AG. They're damned if they do and damned if they don't. They'll look bad if they don't get money to Iraq for the troops and they'll look bad for voting to allow it to go on. They have no choice but to play the game. You're exactly right that this was an excellent move on the part of the dems. If you're screwed either way, give Bush all the money he wants and point the finger in 08, at the debacle that will remain in Iraq. Sad that they're willing to sell out our military and the tax payers to prove a point but that's what this has come to.
Once Bush and all his blind followers are out of there, we won't be in Iraq much longer.
For all the people that want to tell me we need to stay the course for the next 3 decades....forget about what you think SHOULD happen and start thinking about what WILL happen.
Since whomever wins the Whitehouse in '08 , more than likely WILL pull the plug on Iraq, these last two years inevitably are meaningless. No matter how tough that is for some to hear, that's the reality of it. It's not a matter of if people here THINK we should be there another 30 years. It's a matter of 'will we?' I predict, no. Not even another 4 years. You can hardly blame them given the ratio of resources poured into Iraq, in relation to results achieved.0
