Bear shooting question
A couple buddies and I are planning about a week long trip in the Snowy mountains in Wyoming during mid-term break. We're going to be in bear country and since we're planning on packing about a mile or 2 from a trailhead we're going to be bringing along some firepower.
My question is would a 12 gauge slug stop a bear? There will be three of us and we'll all have a 12 gauge. Also, where would the best place to pop one be? I assume the head, right between the eyes, but I'm not sure. Never been in the position to shoot a bear before. Thanks in advance.

Rottweil Brenneke does a mighty good job on wild boar. That much I know.
If a 12 gauge was all I had, (I'd still prefer a rifle!), I'd be wanting a good quality Brenneke for protection from polarbears.
Or the biggest buckshots I could find.
One of the best things you could use - is shells for scaring away birds.
You know - Bird bombs and the like.
Also 12 gauge flares do very nicely.
Bears are afraid of things they don't know.
If they hear the bang and they get hit by - or close by - a flare that has a bright light and sparks along with the hizzing noise it makes.. it'll think twice and most likely flee the area.
That is offcourse ONLY if it isn't attacking you.
The only way to deal with a bear - is shooting it until you're sure it's dead.
Like wild boar - a hurt bear will attack fiercely and give all it's got if it's hurt and see no option but to come straight through you.
People here, when in polarbearcountry, carries a pistol for signalflares or birdbombs.
If they see a polarbear, they'll try to steer away from the bear - if it caught interest in them, they'll try to scare it with flares at first.
The noise from the firing, along with the light and noise from the burning flare is often enough to scare it away.
Some uses those bird bombs that you shoot out and they explode in an incredible bang at some distance away from the shooter.
Again, it's something it doesn't know what to make of.. and plays it safe and retreats/looses interest.
If all else fails - the .30-06 or bigger is put into action.
(it's always ready to use... flare and birdbombs are just first line)
Hand-flares/Emergency-flares as well as rockets are oftes used to boobytrap around a camp.
They do really well too.0 -

As they are running at you you shoot at the tip of the noise, as they run there head bobs up and down and you will eather hit them in the chest "heart shot" or spine. Don't get fancy just shoot and keep shooting till it drops dead or your dead not a whole lot of middle ground there.
If your hunting you can go for the fancy shots.
Thats advice I got from my nabor who has 8+ blackies barried in his yard an several rotting in my back 40. Something about this area makes them mean duno, had one knock the awning off our camper as we sat inside and keep coming around when we were around.
It finnally decided to charge the nabor when he was out deer hunting and he took care of it, I heard the shots actualy. Didn't know it was him till later that week assumed it was just somone shooting at a deer.
Had onother one go threw a campground near us during a holiday weekend in the dusk and actualy take the unions right off a plate a guy was carrying, called the dnr and dnr told them to kill it, they did a week or so later.
Personally I am not to afraid of bears, you can usualy hear or see them coming I am much more afraid of big cats, wolverine and badgers since they are more hunters than foragers unlike a bear.0
