Been on a guided hunting trip?
Seeing the "Hunting in Comfort" topic got me to thinking. How many of you have went on a guided trip? I personally have not, but am thinking of taking one of my sons on one for a high school graduation gift. But, at $3,000-$5,000 per, I believe that I would only go along as a tag-along, not a shooter. It would probably be a whitetail hunt in either Illinois or Kansas.
We lease 200 acres of land and have two small elevated "hunting houses" along with three leaning tree stands and usually have a couple of climbers and do archery, muzzleloader, and rifle. So, it is not like this would be the only hunting he would be doing. The only drawback to our lease is that is 2 1/2 hours away from the house.
I personally have never really enjoyed the thought for a guided trip, but, I think a trip like this would be something he would remember forever, whether he was able to get a deer or not.

Never been on one. I prefer hunting for the challenge of it. If an area is salted with birds, that sort of takes away from the challenge IMO.
Don't hunt big game, so I can't comment on it.0 -
Never been. I would like to, but it's too expensive. 0 -
Yes, I have been on several. If you have a good outfitter and both of you understand your objectives and his resources, it can be a very worthwhile experience. Conversely, with the wrong one it can be just as bad. One of the best that I ever took was an elk hunt in Wyoming where we packed back into a wilderness area. Snowed 38 inches on us. Excellent outfitter, good camp, good cook, did not see an elk but I considered it a very worthwhile trip. Just because it is a guided hunt does not guarantee success. 0 -
No, I've never been on a guided trip. I prefer to scout an area I plan to hunt, look for signs of wildlife, and then determine the best methods for hunting the area. However, if I was going to a vast and remote wilderness area where I had no knowledge of the terrain or wildlife movement a guide would be very beneficial and I can see using one in those conditions, but I would never take part in one of those stocked hunting preserves, in my opinion that isn't hunting. 0 -
find where your gona hunt. get a compass, backpack, topo map, etc. go light! and buy a nice old winchester for graduation with all that money you would have paid the outfitter. 0 -
In a backward kind of way. Anyway you reminded me of an interesting episode from my teen years.
I lived on a farm, had two city slicks come every fall for quail hunting, and I took them around where the coveys were. They paid me with .22 ammo, some of it old and useless.
One of them always brought a double barrel with one barrel plugged so he could carry his booze in it. He would have me hold a cup while he poured. I think the other one always drove him home.
They weren't the most serious of hunters, but they usually got a few, and they did give me some fond memories..0 -
When you go to someone else's territory,..you use a guide. I am a lowlander from the east coast, and when I went to WY, I wasn't gonna waste plane fair and license money on just tromping around somewhere with no knowledge of how to hunt their game. I paid a guide,..and rightly so. 0 -
been on several. elk, argentina, alaska, africa in a next this coming spring..
make sure you do your research...
its not what SOME people think.. "hey lets walk out back and shoot that deer tied to the fence post"
those flamers are usually the ones that are jealous of you for having the experience, most likely that they will not or have not had the chance...0
