Banning assault rifles?
Hey guys,
Ive been noticing a lot of talk on here and from friends about assualt rifles being harder to get in the near future. What is the story? I am in Illinois and im sure that doesnt help. Should I be in the market for one in the near future?

Brian...... Since the sunset of the Clinton assault weapon ban in 2004 the anti gunners are still trying to get rid of the evil guns with pistol grip stocks.
The Clinton ban did nothing to reduce crime, but the libs still hate these guns. Go out tomorrow and buy a couple so you will have them if another ban comes along.0 -

One should always be in the market for another firearm.
If laws were suddenly passed to make all firearms subject to registration, which is a precursor to "turn-'em-all-in", the fewer guns with no paper trail will be worth more, just as someone with knowledge and resources to provide booze during prohibition made out in the '30s.
However, confiscation plus major civil unrest would leave one helpless to gangs preying on the helpless; imagine the law unable to protect anyone less their own. Who you gonna call?
Smith&Wesson, or Mr. Mini-14.
Personally, I feel we are never far from a condition of unrest which will leave the government unable to protect the innocent. Power and electronic failures, food distribution issues, and a broke government = bad times to come. If we cannot continue to give food stamps to 10 million illegals, do you actually think they will peacefully go home to freeload off their families there? Gangs with no regard for gun laws will be ruling your neighborhood. Do you want to leave your family in such a position of helplessness?
Buy as much gun as you can afford; use how to use it; get a few higher-capacity mags, half a brick of ammo for it [ammo that feeds reliably], and go on with life. Hope you never "need" it, but plan for the worse.

The funny thing is, according to the other side assault rifles are designed to be "spray fired from the hip"
It doesn't sound like a very useful law enforcement tool to me....but for some reason, police departments are buying them by the truckload0 -

Well, if you are an average gun owner, you cannot own a true assault rifle because machine guns were outlawed in the 1930's. What you can own, until the Democrats outlaw them, are "faux assault rifles". That would be semi-auto only rifles that only "look" like true assault rifles. 0 -

If you plan to buy a Homeland Defense Weapon in the near future I encourage you to write your Reps as well as e-mail and call or you might not be able to get them in Illinois anymore. We have the HR 1022 to beat out and then the SB0016 here in Illinois.

I'm not taking the chance to see if they are banned in the near future. I'm getting an AK now and saving for the AR cloen as we type. Have a feeling in 2008 we will be getting hit with all kinds of new laws!!! 0 -

I know you know this already, but machine guns were not outlawed in 1934, they were required to be registered, and a tax paid on them. The 1986 legislation did not outlaw them either. It prevented the manufacture and import of them for private sales.
They are still perfetly legal to own in many places.0 -
The problem is, you have to be taxed and "allowed" to have them.
I don't want a full auto gun myself (can't afford the ammo[:D]) but, you should be able to have one if you want it.0 -

There is no such thing as an "assault rifle" That's a term the brady bunch came up with to demonize gun owners... Remember, the term assault usually refers to an attack - such as assault and battery on a person. Unfortunately this term has stuck, and is commonly used in america today. If you use this term, you're just giving the idiots what they want - more langauge to persecute us.
What you are referring to are semi-auto rifles. I don't know the precise details of HR 1022... but if it seeks to ban possession, then going out and buying one is nothing more than a complete waste of money - provided the bill goes through, which hopefully it won't. Unless you intend to break the law anyway, by not turning yours in.
Now if it only seeks to ban the sale of semi-auto rifles, then yes, buying one immediately would be a good idea. If you want to own one anyway... If you're looking for it as an investment, not a good idea because you wouldn't ever be able to sell it.
Of course, hopefully the bill won't go through and we won't have to worry about this crap.0 -

Looks like I have some shopping to do in the next few months, and I think an AK is the first on my list. So it basically bans just about everything. This means I have to get 10 round mags for my Beretta? Would this apply to the whole country or just certain states? And if I already own mags with more than 10 capacity, can I still use them legally? This bill is not going to pass, I will vote against it at every opportunity if this is all the case. 0 -

SB0016 in Illinois has already tackled that loophole. In it, it states you can own anything you previously owned which could include any banned rifle listed, purchased through a private sale BUT, you must notify and certify with the state police that you own it within 90 days of the ban going into effect. How they plan on enforcing this, I don't know. But, technically, on day 91 after the ban, if you have not registered your privately purchased so-called 'assault weapon', and you decide to take it to the range, you are possessing and transporting an illegal firearm. If you are stopped and they actually have a legit way of tracking it, you will be charged with a felony.
I'm beyond furious at this point.0
