Anyone here ever been on a gameshow?
I only know one other of my friends that has. She won a ton of furniture and

...A friend of mines daughter was on the Price Is Right about 6-7 years ago. They went to CA. (beats me why!) on their honeymoon. They ended up winning a big screen TV...had to pay the freight for it back to Texas, and the 40+% gift tax, combined, was about 80% of what they could have bought one here for...but she was happy, got to kiss the old guy that just retired...[:D]

If it is for merchandise instead of $$$, people often do not see a great benefit. Sure, it would be nice to win a vehicle, but in reality one would only receive maybe 1/2 of it's actual value.
I know of a person who won an ATV from a radio station promotion. At the end of the year, she received a 1099 (info reported to the IRS) that was approximately twice the value of the ATV. We called the radio station and they told us the 1099 reporting was the "value of the radio advertising the ATV dealership received for this sponsorship". We simply got the ATV dealership to produce a MSRP listing of an exact ATV and sent that in with their tax return along with a letter explaining what transpired. No problems.
I am sure most (if not all) of these shows/organizations always show the winnings at Manufacturer's Suggested Retail Price or greater. Not what it could actually be purchased for. That way they could show greater gross income. Sure, the bottom line would be the same, but the gross would be higher.
That is what a lot of the early internet companies were doing. They would "barter" with other internet companies through advertising with each other. Inflate the advertising values where they could show more gross revenue and make them appear to have more potential and therefore be more lucrative. Then the founders would sell the companies to investment groups and make out like a bandit.0
