OMFG!!!! QUICK! TURN OFF THE COMPUTER AND RUN!!!! IT'S A SUITCASE NUKE!!!!!!!

Oh... wait... You said svchost.exe... I thought you said something else. Sorry.

svchost.exe is a Microsoft Windows executable file labeled as: "Generic Host Process for Win32 Services". This is a required Windows file and is used to load needed DLL files that are used with Microsoft Windows and Windows programs that run on your computer.

Some times you will notice that there are several svchost processes running at once. Multiple svchost.exe files are loaded when a program needs to be grouped from other Windows services. This is a normal operation of Windows and it is common to see three or four svchost.exe in the Task Manager processes.

What he said. But also remember that it can be used to load and run viruses from dll files - so how that particular instance of it was invoked may be important.

So, don't use Internet Explorer, don't open files you weren't expecting to get from anyone (even a friend... email 'em back and ask if they sent a zipfile or not), use a good antivirus tool (I like ubuntu at www.ubuntu.com but if you insist on windows then http://free.grisoft.com), and don't install all those little bug buddy type stuff for telling you what the weather is, etc.

And when you are ready for a new computer, just get a Mac.
