The "experts" who do the predictions around here have changed the projection for the first of next week by 18 degrees in the last 15 hours. This is a normal pattern from them for anything beyond the next five minutes. I'm sure they have a much better grasp of exactly what effect mankind will have on temperature change over the next 100 years. Anyone who doesn't trust the accuracy of their global projections is considered a moron, of course, but they can't really tell you what the temperature will be in the morning.

10 degrees here. Don't think the overwhelming majority of science is wrong on global warming just because it's cold where it's supposed to be cold in February.

You actually think they're wrong? What are your qualifications to dispute the world of science, what experiments on Global warming have you conducted, how much scientific study on Global warming have you researched? I'm no scientist, but I have enough on the ball to put credence to something that the world of science marches in lock step on.

But just like cancer, there is a huge difference in knowing WHAT is happening, and knowing what caused it or how to cure it. When they can't even get the forecast for tomorrow right, they have little credibility in their 100 year projections, regardless of their expertise.

I would be willing to bet that the reports made in ten years will show considerable differences in the data than the ones being issued now. There are simply far too many variables for the kind of declarative statements some of them are making.

How many times have you seen them get fooled and completely miss what happens with a hurricane that they have been watching for days on end, and we are supposed to trust their accuracy decades out? They aren't even sure where and when a hurricane will hit when it gets to within a few hundred miles of shore, and we are to buy their evaluation for 2095? They are making educated guesses, and that's pretty shaky grounds for establishing world policy at a cost of hundreds of billions of dollars and millions of jobs.

You are correct that they are the most knowledgeable people around, but that's not saying much when it comes to weather and climate.[:)]

Oh its happening, not sure what to do about it. Its propably already happened once. And without us burning a million barrels of oil a day.
that might be why there aren't anymore dino's running around. [:I]

So if it happened once what do we do about it happening again, sounds like to me we are trying to prolong the inevitable. Ok so we prolong it. It's still going to happen then what. we all move to the moon. last I checked the moon is 1/4 the size of earth and they said that if and when it happens the earth will only support 1/3 of the worlds populations to date. and thats is best case. there are still to many people on this rock and i doubt we would be able to get to the moon after the fact.

"First of all, there is -- the globe is warming."

    -President George W Bush, March 29, 2006.

"America is on the verge of technological breakthroughs that will enable us to live our lives less dependent on oil, and these technologies will help us be better stewards of the environment, and they will help us to confront the serious challenge of global climate change."

-President George W Bush, 2007 State of the Union Address

"Our alliance is determined to show good stewardship of the earth -- and that requires addressing the serious, long-term challenge of global climate change."

    -President George W Bush, June 30, 2005.

Of course there is global warming. If there weren't we'd still be in the Ice Age.

Natural phenomenon occurs folks. Are we sure this is not just a natural change in the climate? There is alot of noise out there right now. How much of it is good science?

Watch any high stakes jury trial. You can get a paid expert to say anything!

    Just something to think about...

Dlrjj, these people are far more serious than you must think they are. It's rare when ONE of them goes off half cocked, much less the vast majority. As I've stated, I'm no scientist, but at times there's a situation that I tend to believe a consensus of opinion by the worlds intelligensia. This is not a case of you can always find an "expert" on anything and pay him to say what you want. Predicting short term local weather is a completely different area than Global Warming. Hurricanes, tornados, blizzards, etc. are all short term events, and have durations of days, and the meteorologists are fairly good with predictions. Global Warming is huge in comparison, it's worldwide and inexorable, and has the attention of far more scientific disciplines than just meteorology. It's been watched and monitored since it was first brought to light. Serious changes in the composition of the atmosphere have occured and are accelerating even as we speak. The effects of this are not a wild guess by science. the effects are already measureable, and thereby fairly predictable. The brains of the planet are right.

I know they are serious, and that's what concerns me the most. Geology is not much better. Do any of you remember when there was a prediction of a new quake in the New Madrid fault line a few years ago? The New Madrid fault is the one that caused the Mississippi River to run backwards and fill a couple of lakes in the early 1800's. The Indian leader "The Prophet" made part of his reputation on the prediction of that one around 1811 or 12.

Indiana and the surrounding states were supposed to get hit with another one about fifteen years or so ago. Millions of dollars of earthquake insurance policies got sold at about $50 per $100,000 for wood structures and $100 per $100,000 for masonry buildings. Policies in this area do not usually cover earthquake, so it had to be added on to existing policies.

There were lots of Civil Defense plans created, disaster drills run, and emergency supplies purchased, just like for the 2000 Millennium meltdown. Huge amounts of money, time, and energy spent getting ready.

Not one single tremor out of it. Nothing, Nada, as in, it didn't happen folks. The scientific experts knew it was coming; they just forgot to tell Mother Nature about their expertise and how they were all knowing and all wise. How often do they even come close on the call for an earthquake or volcanic eruption?

They have models, theories, and probabilities, but they don't KNOW, as a FACT, jack crap. PANIC AND FEAR MONGERING IS A GROWTH INDUSTRY.

Dlrjj, coincidentally, my daughter has a degree in GeoPhysics, and her husband is a Phd that works in the Research Dept. at the University of Missouri at Rolla, the Fault is his business. I live in Saint Louis, about 100 miles away. The possibility of a quake out of the New Madrid Fault is real, and everyone in the region is well aware of it, as it gets plenty of press around here. I can't remember a solid prediction of an impending quake in my time, though, like the San Andreas Fault, it is an eventuality. The scientists at Rolla, the main monitoring point of the fault, have always been noncommital on any time frames on the quake. The fault regularly gets peoples attention because tremors are very common. The scientists know it's there, and know it's going to pop, just not when. Global Warming is evidently more measureable, thus more predictable. I do remember some years back a "psyhcic" predicted a major quake out of the New Madrid Fault with a specific date of occurence. He got a lot of media exposure, and I guess some folks took the hook and went to extremes, though I didn't know anyone who bit. The day came and went with no quake, or tremors. The scientists have never sent out a specific "earthquake warning", nor can I remember any panics, CD emergency plans, etc. The role of Civil Defense around here has been replaced by FEMA, and I know that quake disaster plans have existed in this area at least since I was a child. When it happens the worst hit will be Memphis, Saint Louis, and Little Rock.

    James,

I couldn't have said it any better myself!

Well then you are calling our President a liar, since he has acknowledged that global warming exists and that Man is contributing to it. Are you saying that Bush is a liar?

86 Evangelical Christian leaders, including Pastor Rick Warren (author of the Purpose Driven Life), have signed a pledge saying that MANMADE global warming exists, that it is a threat to human existence, and that it is the responsibility of all Christians to be good stewards of God's creation and work to reduce the human causes of global warming:

    http://www.nytimes.com/2006/02/08/national/08warm.html?ex=1297054800&en=c3998565b07f9657&ei=5088&partner=rssnyt&emc=rss

Evangelicals, Scientists Join on Global Warming:

    http://www.foxnews.com/wires/2007Jan17/0,4670,EvangelicalsGlobalWarming,00.html

The Rev. Rich Cizik, public policy director for the National Association of Evangelicals, and Nobel-laureate Eric Chivian, director of the Center for Health and the Global Environment at Harvard Medical School, were among 28 signers of a statement that demands urgent changes in values, lifestyles and public policies to avert disastrous changes in climate.

"God will judge us for destroying the Creation. Therefore, we as evangelicals have a responsibility to be even more vigilant than others," Cizik told a news conference.

"Science can be an ally in helping us understand what faith is telling us," he said. "We will not allow the Creation to be degraded, destroyed by human folly."

Of course it's real Dak, now call the quake. My lifetime? The lifetime of my children? Their grandkids? I can remember when they were discussing it in the schools in terms of how to handle it if it happened during school hours. A good friend of mine was and is an insurance agent and he was laughing at how many policies he was selling to the frightened.

Don't misinterpret what I'm saying. I don't doubt in the slightest that we are going through a warming trend, but the cause, likely duration, and possbile solutions are a different beast. We have tree rings from 2000 year old trees in this country that show regular patterns of warming and cooling, and it was just a few years ago that we were setting records nearly every year for recorded cold. My concern is not that we are not seeing some warming, we are. The cause is much less certain, and the cure is purely speculative. They can't even agree on many projections about the ozone hole.

There are several terminal glacier rubble fields within some miles of my house and the Wabash River Valley was carved out by glacier runoff. I pick up rocks from my fields all the time that show the scars from being pushed all the way from Canada to Indiana. There are hundreds of glacier pothole lakes around here. There have been too many cycles for me to buy the idea that man is the primary fault of this one. We may be, but I'm just not buying that used car from those salesmen at this time.

+1. In this area this time of the year it would be a month below zero, haven't seen below zero in years.

That it would Dak, that it would. I do believe that the scientists are sincere, but I return to the guessing they do about things like hurricanes to explain why I have real difficulty getting too worried about 100 year projections. When my local weathermen can get the rain right over half the time, I might start paying more attention to them.[:D]

It is good though, to discuss something with someone who can have a different opinion without deciding anyone who disagees is a liar, a traitor, or ignorant. If the answer was absolute, there would no longer be a difference of opinion.

It has definately gotten colder around here this year than it has in a while. -15 this morning. Can't remember the last time we had below zero temps for so many days in a row. It still doesn't disprove the fact of global warming. I read an article today stating that wide temp swings are expected to be a part of it. (How they know, I don't know.) But even with the frigid weather we're having, the average temps for the winter are still above normal. Bottom line is, a week of below normal temps doesn't wipe the slate clean.
I don't entirely blame humans for global warming but we are doing enough to aggravate the situation. Ocean temps are warming and coral reefs are bleaching and disappearing before our eyes. I don't know how there's an argument any more.
