Newspaper publishes online list of CCW holders
The Roanoke Times, a newspaper published in Roanoke, Va., recently posted a list of all CCW permit holders in the state and their addresses on the newspaper's website . This newspaper is the only major daily paper published in the western part of Virginia. The list was legally obtained from the main office of the Virginia State Police. After considerable outcry from citizens, the list was removed from the website. One person on the list stated that she had moved twice to escape a violent spouse, and because of the list, would have to move again. The list was obtained to support an article the paper ran on freedom of information and the public's need to watchdog government. The article named names of local government officials who were on the list. The website for the newspaper is www.roanoke.com. If I am right...Texas has the law that you can inquire as to whether an individual has a CHL. They will say yes or no but not give out the information on home address and other stuff.
However...they will send a notice to the CHL holder about who inquired on them. Talk about paying someone back for snooping around...[}:)]0 -

The only goal of publishing such a list is to sell more newspapers, "punish" lawful CCW holders and, lastly and hopefully by accident, to publish a "shopping list" for violent criminals in need of a firearm to steal. 0 -

Why, all you have to do is case the joint for a day or 2 find out when there not at home then go to it. Most robberies happen when people are at work theres a reason for that.
Watch it takes a thief a couple times and you will see how easy it is. Or I believe thats what the show is called, it shows you how they break in and how you can protect yourself.0 -
It would be more in the public's interest to publish listings of individuals convicted of misdemeanors and felonies.
The Roanoke publisher mentioned sex criminals and concealed carry permit holders in the same breath. The Virginia VCDL, an activist group, is holding the newspaper editor's feet to the fire. Gun owners associations in other states would do well to see how effective a watchdog activist group as the VCDL can be instead of sitting on their duffs while unfavorable legislation slips through.
I recall seeing newspaper listings on local convictions in the Southampton Evening Echo when we visited England in 1963. Such listings should have a preventive effect as well as being a cautionary advisory.0 -
Turnabout is fair play - find and publish the publisher's and contributing writers' and editors' home addresses and other personal information. Note that they do not have any guns in their home, but do list whateveer high-dollar items they might have insured and see how they like it.

You know what? I'm really pi$$ed about this and I don't live anywhere near VA.
I know a lot of women who have escaped abusive husbands or boyfriends (my mother's first husband, a/k/a "the sperm donor" is a good example of the guy these women are trying to escape and hide from). These women go through He11 just trying to look over their shoulders and make sure that they're not being stalked or tracked.
My wife would go ape-chit if her ex-husband found out where we live. This is one of the big reasons why she doesn't mind that all of my firearms owner manuals aren't locked in the safe.
So, for some loser reporter's jollies, he just endangered the lives of untold number of citizens.
I know that the press has a First Amendment right to publish what they want, but SCOTUS has also indicated that the First Amendment is not absolute -- for instance, you cannot yell "Fire" in a crowded theater.
If I lived in VA and my name appeared on this list, I would sue the newspaper. They just endangered my life. I'm betting that I could have no trouble finding a sympathetic jury.0 -
They published the same list of CCW here in fla. and with the help of a few good law makers we got a law passed that outlawed it. I think the paper did us a favor by showing us a loop hole in the law that needed correcting and we got it corrected. 0 -

In my state as I understand we have to provide access to the information but do not have to make copies or even allow it to leave the office. Though we cant keep them from hand copying it. 0
