Neil Clark: Wanted: A strongman to hold Iraq together
22aug05
'LET sleeping dogs lie" is not the favourite maxim of neo-conservatives. Neither is "Better the devil you know". But events of the past 2 1/2 years in Iraq have proved once again the wisdom of these two old sayings, and the corresponding lack of wisdom of those who foolishly ignore them.
Before he was awoken by Shock and Awe, the sleeping dog of Iraq was a stable, contained dictatorship led by an ageing, Sound of Music-loving secularist. Now the Iraqi canine is foaming at the mouth, transformed, in the words of the US National Intelligence Council, into "a magnet for international terrorist activity" - a nightmarish world of car bombs and daily assassinations in which 3000 civilians have lost their lives in the past four months.
The Shia-dominated Government, under the growing influence of radical Islamists, edges ever closer to an axis with Iran, while its police force, infiltrated by militant supporters of the radical cleric Moqtada al-Sadr, carries out assassinations of former Baath party members and any others who stand in the way of the country's return to the dark ages.
Faced with their country's descent into anarchy, Iraq's professional classes are, unsurprisingly, leaving in their droves. "I love my country but I am unable to do any service for the people as it is overrun by fanatics and extremists," Abdul Jawad, head of English Literature at Baghdad University, told Britain's The Daily Telegraph. Jawad resigned his position as dean after "religious animals" surrounded his office and shouted war-like slogans. "It is now anti-religious to have free speech, liberal minds and civilisation in this country. It is more security problems than economic. Under sanctions, we had no problems like this."
Women too have seen their rights and freedoms eroded in "liberated" Iraq. Professionals have been targeted and killed by Islamic hardliners and women walking the streets of Baghdad in Western-style clothes have had acid poured on their faces and legs. Meanwhile, the new Iraqi Government contemplates the introduction of sharia law and the abolition of the Personal Status Law, which for five decades has protected the rights of Iraqi women in matters of marriage, divorce and custody.
The neo-conservative solution to the crisis they have created is that they simply don't have one. But as the body bags pile up and public opinion against the war hardens in the US, cutting and running and leaving Iraq to an all-out civil war that would make the break-up of Yugoslavia look like a tea party, is looking the most likely outcome. There is, though, a better way out of the mess.
The answer to both the West's and the Iraqi people's problems lies in a small, window-less cell somewhere in Baghdad. Is it time to bring back into power the man who kept his deeply divided nation together for 2 1/2 decades? Hate him or merely loathe him, Saddam Hussein remains the only man with the authority and experience to re-establish peace and security in his country, as even those who opposed him in the past now reluctantly concede. "If we need a person like Saddam to keep the Shi'ite militias at bay, then so be it," is the view of one pro-US, liberal Iraqi blogger. "I have to admit that until now I have never longed for the days of Saddam, but now I'm not so sure."
But however desirable the return of the Iraqi strongman might be, it is not going to happen. Saddam will be found guilty at his trial - irrespective of the evidence produced, - and will probably face execution, his death added to the thousands of others who have lost their lives since the war began.
But even if we can't bring back Saddam, let's at least acknowledge that his removal from power was a colossal error. Rather than working for regime change, the US, Britain and Australia should instead have been collaborating with the Iraqi leader and acknowledging the key role secular Baathist regimes such as his had to play in the Middle East as bulwarks against a resurgent Islamic fundamentalism. After all, this was the West's policy up until the first Gulf War in 1991. Why couldn't it have been so again?
The US and Britain have been pilloried for siding with Saddam in the '80s, not least by the anti-war Left. But faced with the fearsome reality of Ayatollah Khomeini's Iran - a regime that openly talked of its plan to export Islamic revolution the world over - breaking bread with that country's biggest enemy made perfect sense. Donald Rumsfeld's crime was not doing deals with Saddam in the '80s, as many maintain, but not doing them 20 years later - and for playing such a pivotal role in the destruction of a regime that could and should have been a vital strategic ally.
When I met the Iraqi consul to Britain, Mudhafar Amin, in London in October 2002, he told me that the only winners from an US-led attack on his country would be al-Qa'ida. Amin - a cultured and intelligent man, a graduate of Durham University and a devout Anglophile - could not understand why, in the aftermath of 9/11, Bush, Blair and Howard were so keen to topple a government that had a Christian as its long-serving deputy prime minister and whose president had been denounced by Osama bin Laden as a "socialist infidel". He was not alone in his bewilderment.
Iraq, under Saddam, may have been a dictatorship, and at times a brutal one, but people could walk the streets without being bombed, Christians could worship in peace, women could pursue careers, wear make-up and drive cars and Jawad could give his lectures on Pride and Prejudice without fear of being beaten to death by fanatics.
To many, the idea that Iraq, under Saddam, was the least-worst scenario for both the West and the Iraqi people may seem depressing and defeatist. But 2 1/2 years since his statue was toppled in central Baghdad, the evidence to the contrary is hardly convincing.

CALIFORNIA:
- I can wear sandals all year long
- I go to the Beach - not "down to the shore"
-Our chicks are WAYYYY hotter than yours. Well...Miami can hang.
- I say "like" and "for sure" and "right on" and "dude" and "totally" and "peace out" and "chill" and "tight" and "bro" and I say them often
- I know what real cheese & avocados taste like (DAMN YOU FAKE CHEESE and AVOCADO COMPANY!!!!!!!!!!! WHY MUST YOU DECEIVE THE OTHER 49!!!!!!!!!
-Everyone smokes weed and its no big deal
-We'll roll up 40 deep when something goes down.
-I live next door to Mexicans, but we call them American's! ( I watched the mexicans that live next door to you get shot with "less lethal" weapons when they were holding a peaceful demonstration in the park, waving american flags until the riot police showed up. Women and children? bleen it!!!!!! Shoot'em all, DUDE!!!)
- I don't get snowdays off because theres only snow in Mammoth, Tahoe, Shasta, and Big Bear
- I know 65 mph really means 100( and I've seen people killed in 100 mph car accidents.....they're the coolest all dead and awesome and stuff)
- When someone cuts me off, they get the horn and the finger and high speed chase cuz we dont bleen around on the road
- The drinking age is 21 but everyone starts at 14 (legally 18 if you live close enough to the border)
- My governor can kick your governors ass (when he should be worried about the availability of energy in the state. What do you get when a few million retards vote in an election? The Terminator becomes a public official
- I can go out at midnight ( the wonders of california, freedom 24 hours a day. Why didn't we think of that..............oh yeah we did.........Continental Congress in Philly son)
-You judge people based on what area code they live in, and when asked where you're from, you give your area code ( you're a bleening retard)
- I might get looked at funny by locals when I'm on vacation in their state, but when they find out I'm from California I turn into a Greek GOD (If you're a greek god, go to Mt. Olympus and get ravaged by the flames)
- We don't stop at stop signs... we do a "california roll"
No cop no stop baby!
- I can get fresh and REAL Mexican food 24 hours a day
- All the TV shows you "other" states watch get filmed here ( and 99% of them are unoriginal and bleening blow)
- We're the Golden State. Not the Cheese State. Not the Garden State.....GOLDEN!!!
- We have In-N-Out (Arizona and Vegas are lucky we share that with them)
- I have the most representation in the House of Representatives, which means MY opinion means more than yours, which means I'm better than you [geez.... hahaha]
- The best athletes come from here
*******IF YOU'RE FROM CALIFORNIA, REPOST THIS*************IF YOU'RE NOT, GO SIT IN A CORNER AND CRY******
++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Pennsylvania:
Ahem... So.. Um.. yeah... I read this, and thought I would reply...
Hey... California listen up... Pennsylvania is where its at!
- I too can wear sandals all year long... plus I can put on boots to stomp your feet and I won't even stick out.
- You may be able to go to the "beach" instead of the "shore"... but can you go to the drive thru "Beer Barn?" What now surfer boy?
- You're chicks aren't way hotter than ours... they are almost equal... and thats only due to silicone, saline, botox, lasers and hair dye... We have the real ones and they can beat yours up.
- We're taught to say "Yes Sir" and "Yes Ma'am" and respect our elders because of it. We also say "Howdy" and "fixin" and "Yinz" are pretty much recognized right away anywhere in the world
We're famous
- You may know what real cheese and avocados taste like... but I know what 100% Grade A Angus Beef tastes like. Who wants avocados and cheese when you can have steak and potatoes?
- Haha... who do you think grows the weed and sells it to you?
- Why roll 40 deep when something goes down, if 5 corn fed country boys can get the job done...
- I live next door to Americans, but we call them Mexicans, Italians, Greeks, Irish, etc. Ethnicity and heritage are very important here. we are proud of who we are! All of US!
- Why would you brag about not getting snow days off?
- - When someone cuts me off, they get run over by my big ass truck, then I give them the finger and tell them to go back to California.
- The drinking age is 21, but if you aren't chasin the beer by 1 yr old... you're behind. And can you say... PARTY in the corn fields in McDermott's Back Pasture, BYOB! ... Everyone find an adult to buy the beer! ...? Didn't think so!
- You can go out at midnight? Thats nice, I haven't even come home by then.
- Ok... you said,"You judge people based on what area code they live in, and when asked where you're from, you give your area code" and as hard as I try I have no idea what you're talking about... I think you're watching too much tv. In Hollyweird, You know... where shows are MADE? Maybe that's why you have no idea what it is like HERE for real!
- Yeah, you'll definitely get looked at funny when you come to visit but we have another name for you pretty boys, and its not Greek, its French.
- Of course you don't stop at stop signs... none of you can drive.
- You can pick up Real Mexican food 24 hours a day huh... But can you still go to a Mom and Pop grocery and get fresh homemade baked goods made by the owner every morning?
- Football is a religion, not a sport (Not true for everyone)
- In Pennsylvania, football means football, not soccer. (OK, this is only true for the UNeducated!)
- Pennsylvania is the best! Hey, we gave the US Tom Ridge, that's right, our former governor was the FIRST Head of Homeland Security. Kiss my buttocks, he was brave enough to do it! (The terror alert is "Teal"........should I be scared?)
- In Pennsylvania, 65 MPH means 65 MPH, because here, the police actually give a poop, and have time to catch speeders because they aren't all out looking for Lindsay Lohan to hit a tree or busting gang bangers for drugs every 5 seconds!
"90% of teenagers say "holy poop" before they get in a car accident. The other 10% are from pennsylvania and they say "hold my beer and check this out

Will we still be the Country of choice and still be America if we continue
to make the changes forced on us by the people from other countries
that came to live in America because it is the Country of Choice??????
Think about it. .
All I have to say is, when will they do something about
MY RIGHTS? I celebrate Christmas, but because it isn't
celebrated by everyone, we can no longer say Merry
Christmas. Now it has to be Season's Greetings. It's not Christmas vacation, it's Winter Break. Isn't it amazing
how this winter break ALWAYS occurs over the Christmas holiday? We've gone so far the other way, bent over
backwards to not offend anyone, that I am now being
offended. But, it seems that no one has a problem with that.
This says it all!
This is an editorial written by an
American citizen, published in a
Tampa newspaper He did quite a job; didn't he? Read on, please!
IMMIGRANTS,
NOT AMERICANS,
MUST ADAPT.
I am tired of this nation worrying about whether we
are offending some individual or their culture. Since the terrorist attacks on Sept. 11,
we have experienced a surge
in patriotism by the majority
of Americans. However, the dust from the attacks had
barely settled when the "politically correct" crowd began complaining about
the possibility that our patriotism was offending others.
I am not against immigration, nor do I hold a grudge against anyone who is seeking a better life by coming to America. Our population is almost entirely made up of descendants of immigrants. However, there are a few things that those
who have recently come to
our country, and apparently some born here, needs to understand. This idea of America being a
multicultural community
has served only to dilute our sovereignty and our national identity. As Americans, we
have our own culture, our
own society, our own language and our own lifestyle. This culture has been developed over centuries of struggles, trials, and victories by millions of men and women who have sought freedom.
We speak ENGLISH, not Spanish, Portuguese, Arabic, Chinese, Japanese, Russian, or any other language.
Therefore, if you wish to become part
of our society, learn the language!
"In God We Trust" is our national motto. This is not some Christian, right wing, political slogan... We adopted this motto because Christian men and women,
on Christian principles, founded this nation, and this is clearly documented.
It is certainly appropriate to display it
on the walls of our schools. If God
offends you, then I suggest you
consider another part of the world as
your new home, because God is part
of our culture.
If Stars and Stripes offend you, or
you don't like Uncle Sam, then you
should seriously consider a move
to another part of this planet. We
are happy with our culture and have
no desire to change, and we really
don't care how you did things where
you came from. This is
OUR COUNTRY,
our land and our lifestyle. Our First Amendment gives every citizen the
right to express his opinion and we
will allow you every opportunity to do
so. But once you are done complaining, whining, and griping about our flag,
our pledge, our national motto, or our
way of life, I highly encourage you
take advantage of one other great American freedom,
THE RIGHT TO LEAVE.
If you agree -- pass this along;
if you don't agree -- delete it!
AMEN
I figure if we all keep passing this to our friends
(and enemies) it will also, sooner or later
get back to the complainers, lets all try,
please
