Best AK-47 for UNDER $400? Here on GB? Which?
I'm in the market but don't have a lot of green. Can an expert on AK's recommend one from those available on the auction side? I don't want the WASR so what else is good on the cheap budget?

You can build your own. Final cost, depending on how you do it, will run about 500+/-. I believe mine ended up costing less than that; tools included. 0 -

reciever off here or another site (expect 60-120)
kit itself(ehh.. 2-300)

do a search on the auction side for SAR-1, make a bid on one of the bottom two...avoid the top one, it is not a SAR-1 but a WASR 0 -
Why wouldnt you want a WASR? My brother (krinkovman) has one and its performed flawlessly. -dave- 0 -
I suspect there is better value for the money than a WASR. 0 -

I'm afraid that I didn't spot anything here on GB in that price range, other than the WASR, Saiga and some junky hodge-podge thing I shouldn't even mention. I've got a Saiga in 7.62 x 39 and one in .410 for deer. They are well made firearms based on the AK-47 design and are quite reasonably priced.
If you care to look elsewhere, there's AA used Romanian on "one of the other auction sites" with an opening bid requirement of $350 :
"AK-47 7.62x39 with new reciever and new barrel with threaded on muzzle brake intire weapon has be newly parkerized"
There's also AA new one for $375 :
"The Romanian AK-47 is famous for its super quality with a pistol grip and a laminated stock. Comes with cleaning rod, cleaning kit, oil bottle and sling. Also comes with two 30 round mags. Barrel Length is 16", overall length is 35"."
There's also AA Ohio Ordnance AK-47 for $369.99 :
"AK-47 Ohio Ordnance Receiver * Built with Bulgarian Parts * Wood is in nice original condition * Bore is in excellent condition * test fired only * Includes sling * Gun has Bayonet lug and angle muzzle brake"
Sorry about the stutter with my A's. [;)]

Some think Chinese quality is better and more accurate.0 -

Spend a little more and buy this. Best of both worlds.0 -

+ 1 It's in your price range and one of the best at any price. I have one and know people who have had them. No complaints. You could always change the stock with a pistol grip stock later.0 -
The WASR's work fine for the money. 0
