Could we hurt EXXON/MOBIL?
Or at least make them lower their prices, if the nation boycotted them for 1 week?I'm sure it would force them to lower their gas price, but, would the others follow suite?

Why? What purpose would a boycott serve? If EVERYBODY stopped driving so many miles the price of gas would drop. If you made one less trip to get beer or go to a ball game for some kids. Wait an additional three days to mow. CONSERVE the gas and prices will fall. 0 -

IMO prolly not, to many people are happy that it is not $6 per liter and until you can change the rules of supply and demand we are stuck where we are. SURE WOULD BE NICE IF WE COULD
not to mention most everyone has 401ks, stocks, and bonds and such. If we where to get the price of gas lowered we would still be out the same amount of money or more just no at the pump [V]
their are very few 401ks mutual funds things of tht nature that don't anchor around a big oil company. if they do anchor around another industy or company it is prolly owned largily by the oil companies. at least that has been what me and my finacial advisor have decided.0 -
Maybe if we came up with an inexpensive renewable resource that we could use as a fuel source, we wouldn't need to rely on petrolium. Then again, it's not inexpensive to develop such methods of producing usable energy. I guess we should all bite the bullet to break the oil companies' hold on us... 0 -

Citgo is owned by Chavez,Venezuela,he also just nationalized all the oil fields there.He now owns everyones oil down there. The best to boycott would be Citgo,but as he has a major market in China I don't think it will do much good. 0 -
Boycotting an oil company would force the companies to RAISE their prices in order to maintain the same bottom line.
In the situation we now find ourselves, supply and demand is a minor factor in setting prices at the pump.

America has the cheapest and cleanest gasoline in the world and still people complain.
The focus should not be on the oil companies. Rather it should be on the government and environmentalists. America needs to build more and newer refineries and also switch to nuclear power.
Until then, dont critize Exxon or any other oil company.0 -
...The only way a boycott would work, would be to do it in stages. To get enough people to do it would be impossible.
Hypothetical:
1) Target Exxon first, plenty of other stations to buy from.
2) At the end of the first week,(keep Exxon on the list), boycott Texaco.
3) At the end of the 3rd week, boycott Shell. keeping Exxon and Texaco on the list.
...Now do this on and on adding different stations each week. After the 4th week Exxon is beginning to hurt and Texaco is beginning to take notice.
Keep adding stations each week and as the weeks pass the stations that were targetted in the beginning are/should be crying at this point as it is all about the almighty dollar.
In theory it is simple and it would/could work...the 'ol domino theory. Alas, people would never commit, work together to do this...because people say "oh, it wont matter if JUST this once I buy gas from this station on the "dont buy list"...like people that say "oh, it's just one vote, it doesn't matter"...[:(!]

Chavez has declared all petrolium in his country as his. He controlls it with the help of the military. And if you look at what venezula pays for gas, you might re-think the whole idea that america pays the cheapest prices. 0 -

Just an interesting note, Standard Oil Company was broken up into 34 different companies and many of them are still alive and thriving today, Exxon, Chevron, Conoco are just a few of the examples. Imagine what prices would be like if we hadn't busted up this monopoly. Sometimes it seems as we should break these guys up to increase competition but I don't think it would help because of the supply and the demand differential. 0 -

Gasoline prices have been dropping now for several weeks, at least here in California. I've been boycotting Union Oil since they laid me off in 1984 and I know that Union Oil (now owned by Conoco-Phillips)is now with in weeks of finally breaking! 0 -

The "rest of them" will notice a increase in their market share due to Citgo absence, along with a tiddy increase in their motor fuel profits with no effort on their part. The fewer players in the petroleum market just means more cash in the pockets for those firms who remain.0 -

Why these hair brained schemes all center around taking down Exxon-Mobil has never once been explained. The company is massive and it's revenues, if it were a country, would place iot at around #27 on the list of world nations GDPs. You can't hurt Exxon-Mobil, nor can the company be scared into lowering it's prices unlesss the unthinkable happens...Americans cut their crude oil consumption by about 3% per year for the next ten years or switch to alternate fuels. Exxon stockholders are taking the safe bet that this sort of drastic action will never happen and that our petroleum consumption will continue to increase over the next decade becasue as soon as American motorists discover that alternate fuels like ethanol are not going to be sold cheaper than gasoline, consumers rapidly lose interest. 0 -
3 percent is easy. That's approximately one less trip to buy Chinese crap at WallyWorld a week for everyone. Problem solved and now we have a gas surplus. Let prices fall! 0
