Ethanol in gas
I was told today that the ethanol in gas is deteriorating the gas lines on my chain saws.I havent had this problem on anything else.Only my Husky and Sthil saws.there is supposedly a bullitan that Echo put out on the subject.Anyone heard of this??

I know that it is not compatible on older cars Had some accidentaly put in my 69 f-100 fuel pump started leaking and the floats in carb dissingated 0 -
Ethanol is very caustic. E85 vehicles are specially equipped (stainless steel and nylon parts). 0 -
Ethanol will hurt rubber components. As far as mixed which is usually about %10 ethanol I have never heard of any problems like that. Not that it couldn't happen though when the gas and ethanol evaporate. My vehicle has had a mix in it since I bought it 7 years ago, no problems. All the vehicles my parents drive do not have problems. They have been using a mix for about 15 years. 0 -
I've been told that the ethanol in the gas does not stay suspended with the oil so that when you start it up it's burning raw gas and frys the piston {unless you shake it up first } 0 -

The Ethanol gas will destroy carburetor accelerator pumps in the older carbs, the newer kits usually have the alcohol resistance type pumps as replacement, the older fuel pumps are also destroyed in contact with alcohol. We have learned when storing an old cars/tractors for the winter to start using alcohol free gas in early fall, alcohol gas attracts water, causes rust, scale inside the tank and carb to break loose, also will deteriorate neoprene fuel lines. All of which causes any number of problems, the most common being plugged jets, fuel lines, screens and on the road fuel starvation. a couple years ago on one 20's car, had been unused for around three years, we removed the complete fuel system, installed a new tank and lines and basically rebuilt the carb as everything was so gummed and plugged up it wasn't any sense trying to save the existing system, it was determined it had been parked with Ethanol in the tank.
Usually the alcohol free fuel available around here is around 20 cents more per gallon than the Ethanol, I use it in all my small engines lawn mowers, chain saws Ford tractor and any one or two cylinder engines, that work hard for a short period of time and are idle for longer periods of time, works for me having no problems. In my opinion 20 cents a gallon is less than the aggravation. time lost, the work of repairing and cost of parts0 -

From what I understand ethanol is high in oxygen (like newer oxygenated gas) anytime you have excessive oxygen in old lines/pipes they will corrode. 0 -
Another problem, not addressed in the MSM, is that burning Methanol/Ethanol results in Aldehydes, as in Formaldehyde - yep, the stuff used in Science class to preserve biological specimens - also the stuff they are trying to legislate out of home insulation, and products that use foamed in insulation. Fumes from Aldehydes (a GREENHOUSE GAS) are irritating to the eyes and the lungs, Damaging to any biological process required of living tissues. 0 -

Check it out. Ethanol has about 1/3 less BTU's - gallon per gallon -than gasoline. BTU's is what makes your car engine produce power as any mechanical person knows.
well one of us isn't mechanical, btu's is a byproduct of combustion, it has nothing to do with making actual horse power0 -
I think most all gas at the pumps has 10% ethanol, except at the docks for boats. Am I wrong? 0 -

Some states require a sticker/placard notifying you if ethanol/methanol is present. It can bring down a plane, if it gets used, so it is important to those who fill their planes with Mogas.0 -

Ethanol plants use of corn has driven up the corn prices and increased the cost of feed for dairy cows, beef cows, chickens, turkeys, ducks, etc. so the cost of these products has increased at your local grocery store.
The higher corn prices have driven up any food stuff that has corn in it ....... like breakfast food, corn muffins, etc. etc.
Ethanol is likened to a hot air balloon ... the initial investors get rich and the johnny come latelies will take it in the shorts when the balloon busts ........ just like the Saving and Loans did a few years back.

There is NO savings in buying 10% ethanol blend gas - and E85 may only be used in vehicles SPECIFICALLY designed to use it .. and most get bad fuel economy.
Ethanol is a ruse and scam perpetrated upon the public.
And that is how it is and my opinion.

I visited a local airport hoping to bum a ride in a recently completed Vans RV7 with an Eggenfelner converted Suburu powerplant & cs prop.
Anyway, the owner had crashed it near the airport and was in process of rebuilding this jewel of a homebuilt. His story is that the auto fuel dissolved the tank sealant, clogging up the fuel system.
I wrote to the EAA whose research resulted in autogas STCs for some light planes. The EAA passed on my letter to the engineer who did the study, the plane mfr and others. I received a weak reply to my demand for a revaluation of current autogas suitability for aircraft and a begging off due to lack of funds.
The bottom line is that ethanol is bad for fuel systems but not necessarily for the engine and is strongly recommended not to be used for aircraft.The EAA was going to publish a strong statement on that but hasn't. I would think existing Auto Fuel STCs would be recinded but they didn't reply to that issue.Maybe someone needs to be killed before anyone backtracks on previous approvals. Apparently fuel produced by all mfrs starts off with the same spec.and goes into a pipeline. At the distribution point it gets doped up with ethanol and the special additives each brand calls for.
Of these additives, only ethanol is detrimental to aircraft fuel sustems. It was recommended you fill up a tanker truck with the fuel before the doping up process and fill storage tanks at your airport since the fuel will meet 80-87 octane Av fuel specs.
It's interesting and unpleasant to hear of all this other machinery reacting adversely to the 10% ethanol. Besides being cheated by this lower energy additive, it causes damage and maybe personal injury.0 -

V35: Ethanol has a lower boiling point than Gasoline, so will cause vapor lock in a hot engine or on hot days when you go to start a CARBURETTED engine. Vapor lock is also an issue when you have to suck fuel from a low-wing tank. Gravity feed from overhead tanks avoids this part of the problem. Ethanol/methanol is not compatible with the rubbers and synthetic rubbers that are most commonly found in gasket materials and tank bladders - (Buna-N materials excepted).
I had an STC on my old (1967 K model) Cessna 182, and flew and used Mogas in local flights and whereever I could find it on airport while travelling, mixing/using AvGas elsewhere, for a period, 1984-1994.
Had no problems with such use, but I studiously avoided Ethanol/Methanol.
One good thing about Ethanol/Methanol use - the alcohols suck up any water in the tank, leaving your fuel system from tank to cylinder completely moisture free. This is offset, however by harder starting as the temperatures fall, and the problem gets worse as the percentage of alky rises. Full-on alky motors are cold blooded SOBs.0 -
