I would have to say that I have owned a bunch of different ak's including a wasr. Some did not look as good in the fit and finish dept. They all fired and never jammed on me. The only "like" gun I had a problem with was an sks and that was a mag problem. I would not be scared of any ak performing(except a homebuilt)

It appears the Bulgarians are about as exspensive as the Polytech's.I saw a Yugoslavian RPK on here for $3600.00....WTH?

if you trying to0 spend around 350-400 get a wasr, they look a little cheaper, but ive got 900 rounds through mine without a malfuntion. And i didnt find the stock cheap at all, ive also got a tapco side folder i put on it sometimes. If your looking at spending 450-500 look at the yugos, theyre nicer than the wasrs, they dont have a chrome lined barrel, but as soome one on here said a while back, theres not one national match barrel thats chrome lined, IE, its not that important.

I guess there is a point to the fact that I could refinish that stock to any color I want and save a little bit of money.Dont know why I didnt consider that but I didnt.

bulgarians are expensive because they're milled and supposedly pretty good. some ppl think they're as good as the polytech.

rpk's are going to be more expensive because while they're stamped, they have a thicker gauge metal.

Bulgarians are well made and not overly expensive.

Are the milled ones as reliable as the stamped or just more accurate?I know that might sound like a stupid question but I swear I always heard that the reason the AK-47's were so reliable was because of the loose tolerances between parts and it would still function with the dirt and grit in there because the parts were still moving freely because of the gap tolerances and the M-16's were more accurate but less reliable in adverse conditions because of tighter tolerances.I dont know if milled or stamped makes a difference which is why I ask.

dont be too quick to dismiss home-built, my parts kit has had no malfunctions with nearly the 1500 round mark comeing up quick.
(my daughter LOVES the a.k. and the p-64!)
edit...a parts kit, reciever flat and rivet kit will yeild a good shooter that was an actual issue arm at some point for under $300

How do you home build one.Does a parts kit literally come with everything you need and you assemble it yourself? Please explain that to me because that sounds very interesting.

    Oldemagics,
Not like that at all--I meant someone else's home built! LOL I would like to think i could trust my own. Infact i just started a new thread on the heat treating of the receiver.

If you go for a Yugo don't forget that some parts are specific to the Yugo so many of the usual accessories are not suitable.

you can buy the parts kit and a pre-made reciever (around $100) or one of the tapco flat reciever plates, that one you have to bend to shape from flat steel..but when done there is no paper trail because there are no "guns" being sold to record. on the minus side you can never EVER sell that rifle or you become a "manufacturer" without a license...very bad in the eyes of the feds!
can be done in home workshop if you have a press of some kind to remove the bbl/trunion assembly as they are pressed together and pinned
over all a real simple job if you are careful
