That's the way they work.
The pawn shop, particularly one in a big chain, does not want to sell your stuff; they want you to come back after it and pay the interest. If you don't come back, they want to make an outrageous profit to make up for their loss of outrageous interest. That's why the loan amount is only a small fraction of the actual value.
The smaller owner-operated shops may be more generous, and the owner may look at the loan more as a purchase, figuring he will make a decent profit whether you pay the interest, or he ends up selling the item.
The person you deal with in a chain store is only an hourly employee and he has to do what the bosses say. In the smaller shop, you may be dealing with the boss himself.
Regarding guns: Some pawn chains won't deal in guns at all. Others will make loans on them, but won't retail them if the pawnee defaults. In that case, the guns are sold wholesale to dealers.
Some pawnbrokers are caring, honest, decent businessmen, but others are scum-sucking bottom feeders.0 -
What's the big deal? You're going to get the stuff back after the 27th, right? 0 -
Many of those pawn shops are major ripoffs. They lend you 15-20 cents on the dollar and if you don't redeem, they want a fortune for your gun. There's one pawn broker with a nasty attitude who does the Hampton, Va show. He prices his guns over retail and still won't take less. Then he bitches about how lousy the gun show was. [:(!]
This "Annie Oakley" 9422 has been for sale at least six times by a pawn shop. Past bidding has been up to $1,500 and was still "Reserve not met" and they probably don't have more than $200 in it.

Pawn shops only work becuase they don't give a lot of money for collateral. They are really only good for people that need less than $250, real quick. The local guy better hope you come back, becuase he overpaid for the stuff for pawn purposes. Truthfully, these guys are not masters of any particular trade, so they can't tell trophy match one off Ed Brown 1911 from a chinese knock off. 0 -
...and be prepared to fill out another insta-check form to get Your gun back. 0 -
DO NOT BORROW MONEY TO BUY GIFTS. Put a card in a envelope with a picture of the gift, let her wait until the $$$ is available. 0 -
You stated that you only needed $500. The first guy offered it to you. Whats the problem? If you borrow more, you will just have to pay more back. 0 -
AMSCOT=Payday loan, Keep your property..Lower interest rate. 0 -
Good thread. I have never pawned anything mostly cause I didn't have anything worthwhile to pawn. I do cruise them to maybe buy something at a reasonable price but walmart is usually cheaper! Tom
PS around my house if the money ain't there, well that't just too bad. maybe next year if things are better.
PPS just had my propane tank topped off. Here in Mississippi it is 2.65 a gallon. Merry Christmas! Tom0 -

That's absolutely correct. If you pawn your gun that you've owned for 30 years and the background check comes up with anything that prevents you from buying a gun when you go back to claim it, you can NOT redeem your own gun! That may also apply to guns left at a dealer for sale on consignment.0 -

I ask about the rifle one time. The reserve price they are asking is $1999.00.0 -
take what it's worth used,
for a loan they'll give you 1/3 of that
buy it outright they'll give you 1/2 of that
that first pawn shop was bad. the second one, I never been to one that generous.
if they're selling it, if it's old/obsolete, but still "new in box", they'll sell it for what you can buy a nice brand new up-to-date one at a store. even if it's busted up or missing parts, they'll sell it at almost brand new price.
I never set foot in a pawn shop any more.0 -
The rifle is beautiful.
How much is it for real worth ??

Very good advice.
That is what I would do.0 -
Pawn shops get a bad rap when it comes to the amount they "offer" for a loan.....its a loan....not a sale. If you plan to borrow a certain amount whatever the item is actually worth really doesn't matter one teeny bit.
and.... (I couldn't stress point enough)
Its not "yours" if you borrow money on it. There is a contract saying the pawn broker will not sell your item until the loan is paid.0 -

There's a brand new one on the "other" auction site with a "Buy it now" of $1,200.0 -

That's ridiculous, especially for a pawn shop. [:(!]0 -
You folks can say what you want, but pawnshops provide a service. If you are in the business, you come to realize that everyone is trying to rip you off by pawning crap that doesn't work. You have to check and double-check everything and listen to "I didn't know it was broken".
Right now, I tell people "Guns or Gold" if they want to pawn something. Electronics (TV's, DVD players, Car systems) are ten cents on the dollar. No kid stuff at all (PS2, X-Box, etc.).
I love to hear someone say when I ask them if they have any guns they can pawn, "Nah, I don't pawn my guns". Well pal, you ain't getting my good money. If they are going to come back after whatever POS they are trying to pawn, they can damn well come back after their guns.
You fellows bitchin about the prices are obviously not too suave at haggling. If all you do is read price tags without saying anything, then you are wasting yours and the pawnshops time. Just leave. If you can deal like an Arab trader, you will do fine and score big.
I had some lady come in today wanting to sell some guns of her late husband. I walked out to look and she had a Model 37 Winchester, 16 gauge and a .22 Stoeger Luger. Neither looked very good..She wanted $500. She said "I looked up the pistol on the internet". I offered her a hundred twenty five. She left thinking I was a crook even though I told her she MIGHT be able to get $200 selling them to someone else. I figured I could get my $125 back on the Stoeger and maybe make $50 on the Winchester.
Oh well, no good deed goes unpunished........[xx(]0 -
Here are pics of the guns that I tried to pawn

On long term disability, have not worked now for 9 months, awaiting on Social Security as 100% disabled.[xx(]
Dang insurance check due to be mailed the 23rd of the month, thus the "Pawn Shop Experiance".
Credit cards, GONE, used to have 5 Visa/MC accounts.
Now only Mama's single account is open.
Did end up getting the $500 on the 45, to someone that knew what is was.[;)]

VERY WELL SAID!!0 -
A pawn shop is just like any other business,,they are there to make money, they are not there for you, they are not there to make you deals, they are there to make a profit,If I was runiing one and you came in wanting to pawn your guns what they offered is just about what I would have offered,If you came in wanting to sell ,the offer would have gone up knowing I could go ahead and try to resale your items to regain my money and make a little PROFIT,,LETS TAKE YOUR 1911,I offer $200,you pawn it,I have to sit on it for how many days ?? until the pawn is up,you dont come back so I put it in the case to sell,1911's are popular but every shop has at least a dozen so it sits for how many months before I sell it,,all this time I am still down $200 I could have used to do another pawn where the person did come back and I made good profit on the interest,,I have never run a pawn shop but I have run several high end building material outlets and I own a bookstore now and I can tell you if you want to survive in business and make a profit it all depends on how many times you turn your inventory in a year, yes I may make a little money when the gun sells but in truth I have lost money because I could have turned that $200 many times over on loans instead of it sitting dead in the case in inventory 0 -

This is the way!
If you can't afford it, you do not deserve it!0 -
Garry - you have nailed it.
I don't know what is so hard to understand.
If you need five hundred, and he offers five hundred and you aren't selling the items - where's the beef ??
Doug0 -
I don't have a problem with the pawn rates. Like someone said, you were offered the money you needed and intended to get your guns back. Right.
But it chaps my butt when I see them asking NEW prices for used stuff.0 -

I don't know about the value of the Stoeger but you're way off on the Winchester.0 -

Henry, a 16 gauge Model 37 single barrel in so-so shape don't bring very much. If you want a Winchester Model 9422 in so-so shape for $250, let me know and I'll put it on auction for a BIN today. Or a Model 64 (or 67, I forget) .22 short gallery gun for the same price. Both of those are below book.0 -
I don't have a problem with pawn rates.
By the way what is the pawn rate these days.
I have never pawned anything in my life so I honestly don't know.0
