Amazing Grace-----Bagpipes
Just attended (pallbearer) one of my uncle's funeral this week and they played a couple of Elvis' gospel songs (Ugh!) Which got me to thinking about one (I think) of the most beautiful songs ever written--"Amazing Grace". When it's played on bagpipes, I get tears in my eyes. Absolutely beautiful! I downloaded 4 versions of the song played on bagpipes this afternoon on the net. Told the wife---you got to play that song when I croak!

played that during a Sunday service that was held there...extremely

....When dad died ten years ago, I had no preferences, except that the casket be wood, and the organist played Amazing Grace. I was raised Catholic, but I'm pretty much a heathen, agnostic. That aside, if that song doesn't bring a tear to ya, you ain't right. On bagpipes, it's even more somber. My wife knows what to do, also. 0 -
Listened to a scotchman playing the bagpipe some years ago.
He told stories, explained about the songs and played songs that were once outlawed.
The bagpipe was also outlawed at some point in time.
But GOSHDURNIT the Amazing Grace sounded wonderful.0 -
Told my other half- for me, no Amazing Grace,(makes people cry) and tell the Bugler to skip Taps. But see if the kid knows the melody to Garryowen! (inside joke for fellow Cav troopers!) 0 -

I've always enjoyed listening to the pipes at funerals/church but have never been 'emotionally moved' - until we were up at the lodge at Lake Louise, Alberta. It was late in the afternoon and the lake had a wispy layer of midst covering it to the mountainous background. It looked a lot like some of the scenes of The Lord of The Rings, shot in New Zealand.
Anyway, we had just gotten out of the vehicles to get some shots of the awesome scene when the pipes were heard, rolling over the lake mist ... refrains of Amazing Grace - must have been fifty or more. Everyone stood thunderstruck - not a word until the last notes had echoed and faded.
The Canadian Army was hosting Commonwealth Bagpipe teams from all over the 'Empire' to compete there that week.
... I've never been able to hear a pipes rendition of Amazing Grace without clouding up again. It was the entire experience - lake - mist - mountains - setting sun ... all of it.[8D]0 -
Amazing Grace on bagpipes will be played at my funeral. It is a beutiful sound. But i cant believe you didnt like Elvis singing gospel. 0 -
always liked pipe music, most fantastic is "Amazeing Grace" when pipes do a stanza or two followed in by full orchestra.
(as in the "Star Trek" movie when SPock died)0
