Deal or not

Went to the local gunshop. They had a Remington 542 woodmsater semi auto, in 308 . Decent looking, few SMALL chips in highly detailed stock. blueing 80%+

350 price tag..

Good deal?

    Isn't the Woodsmaster a 742 ??

    I think it's $50 high.

    It'd be OK if it was perfect.

    By the way - the 742s are wonderful firearms.

    The 742 Woodsmaster is an excellent gun as long as you keep them clean and use quality ammo. The big problem now-a-days is that the majority of them are worn out. It has been a long time since any were made and they are a rifle that gets a lot of use. If you are interested in it try to take it out and test fire it first. I test fire them by loading a magazine and firing the complete mag just a fast as I can pull the trigger. In this area a 742 will bring $350. to 375. as long as it isn't beat up and functions properly.

    BDL or ADL? The BDL has the basket weave. I see them once in a while around here for around $400. The ADL are about $350. I have NEVER had mine jam on me. Like someone else posted they need to be cleaned well. Also the .30-06 is more common than the .308. Just my .02

    SonDave has a 742 .30-06 ADL carbine.

    It is the most accurate rifle I have ever fired, and I have shot a few.

    5 round cloverleafs at 100 yards, with witnesses.

    Daddy, Yes it is BDL. Pretty weaving too!

    Doug, I did test fire and REALLY liked that gun. PS, my bad on the brain fart, 742 IS right. I think I am going to snatch this one up.

    i have the 742 in 308 and it is one of my favorite hunting rifles never had any problems with it hanging up or jamming but as others has said keep it clean

    Ah! Thanks for the tip. Perhaps I should reconsider. I was asking about a new 700 dressed in wood in the 30-06. Priced me at 750 and offered a fair trade on the gun I was wanting to rid myself of. Perhaps that is a better route.

    That is the price of a PSS, or Varmit Special, around here...plus a little.

    Good hunting gun. Wouldn't shoot it 365 days a year, but will last a lifetime plus as a huntin' gun.

    I bought my wife a practically brand new 742 Woodsmaster in .308 this year. She took my Ruger .44 carbine instead. .308 still has quite a punch on back end.

    742's were designed to last 4 years by Remington (kinda undershot didn'y they). The rails in the top of the receiver wear out because they are of a softer metal than the bolt. If you look inside the receiver often you can see "waves" on the top, a sure sign they are wearing out. As was stated before a no fix.
