You Tried Oysters, Now How About Balut?
Once on a layover in Manila, I was touring the town at night and drinking Red Horse. A local Patriarch asked me to join him on his porch to shoot the breeze.
A street vendor came by with some baluts and Triple X (his name) called him up to buy one. Being about half loaded and never having tried one, I too got one. Triple X expressed amazement that a round eye would try one and happily told me how to peel the shell and put a pinch of salt into it.
After I drank the broth, I started chomping. It was good! Like crunchy chicken soup. I even got another.
So how many have tried these tasty little delicacies?

...I have never, ever been drunk enough that I could be talked into eating a balut. I could be so drunk as to be drowning on my own vomit, and still wouldn't eat a balut. I could be.....well, no, never. I have certain limits. 0 -
Don't even know what it is, I would probably try it, unless it is a roach. 0 -

...I believe it's a duck egg that has been allowed to develop to a point just before hatching.0 -
Well, maybe not. As I have no plans to be nearer the Philippines than the Northern Territory, it probably will not be an issue. 0 -
I got the shell opened, looked inside and barely managed to keep down most of an evening's worth of San Magoo. Was too chicken to go any further. 0 -

Duck that!0 -
I've eaten everything from chicken guts on a stick to pig's head soup (with brains and eyeballs) but I could NOT eat balut! Something about that tiny baby chicken just stopped me from doing it. And I LOVE chicken! I shouldn't have looked at it, I guess.

Re: Balut
Yep, CindyBar on Gordon street, at Subic used to serve it - yummy! I had forgotten that! Nothing like eating an aborted duck fetus! Thanks for the memories![:D]0 -

I have been so drunk I fell down the stairs at the New Jolo.
I sent a new Chief to the top floor of the 007 club on Shore Patrol.
But I have never been so drunk I would eat a balut.
The smell would kill a buzzard on a gut wagon.
I would like to return to Olongapo just to see what it is like now.
