Of the two rifles what would you rather have.
I think the SKS is a Cadillac compared to the M44.

Never tried the M44. Like my SKS.

that's a weird comparison, one is semi the other is bolt, not to mention they use completely different rounds. on top of that M44 is kind of a useless rifle, why not just get M38? unless of course you're planning charging someone with the bayonet.

At 150-300 yards you would notice the difference.

I'll take the Cadillac over both.

The comparison is they are both 100.00 surplus rifles.
Well the SKS is now closer to 200.00

Now you've even further expanded the range. It's like asking how would M14 compare to K98 or something.

But all-n-all, SKS would be my first choice (over M44 of course), no matter where it was made. Mosins are sitting in my closet with a crapload of surplus ammo for one reason only -- for when I run out of other ammo or other rifles seize, it's a great zombie killing gun. I wonder if anyone makes 30-round mags or drums for Mosins.

Which one? I was just at a friend's wedding, rented a CTS -- what a joy to drive. Next time will try ESV or even just the little Escalade and if I find one for rent -- STS.

Have both - apples and oranges - of the two, the SKS's get used more - mainly at
    the ranch.

    Depends what the usage is.

SKS for a SHTF rifle, M44 for a target, plinking, hunting rifle.

Another for the SKS.The Mosin is probably more accurate and cheaper to get but I love my SKS.

Do you work for Washington Post or something? It's one of the best out of context quotes I've seen here on GB so far. Done truly very in politicos fashion.

The 38 & 44 are identical except for the bayonett and you can take the bayonett off!

I personally would rather have my M-44 over my SKS in most situations!

And if I am going for real long shots, I'll take my 91/30 over the M-44!

Each of these guns have different porposes so a true compairison cannot truely be made!

If I understand correctly, the bayonet on M44 when folded greatly affects accuracy, my rough guess is that it was an idea of some bureaucrat buffoon to have the bayonet permanently attached for whatever reason, soviet bureaucrats are just like any vogons anywhere in the world. Anyhow, why M44 over SKS? Very curious. What make SKS do you have?

    I have a Yugo.

And I said in most situations!

For target shooting, hunting, or anything shooting 150 yards or more I'll take the Mosin.

Under 150 yards in a combat situation I'll take the SKS.

Over 300 yards and a sniper situation I'll take the Mosin 91/30.

Like I said each gun has an area that it would be better in.

SKS- I have seven of them. Bought when they were only $89 each. But I have one M44 and one M38. Both fine rifles but I hate the bolt actions on those surplus Russian Nagants.
