Threading a barrel

How much should one pay? I took my Sako Quad (loose barrel) to be threaded 1/2" x 28 for a supressor. And I think I paid too much[}:)]

    Thats an odd ball thread. If the person that did it used a tap. I would probably have charged $60 or so depending on how much the tap would have cost. If it was single pointed, then it might be slightly cheaper, but not much. If gunsmith charged like a machine shop, everyone would be doing their own gunsmithing.

    If you think about it like this

    Tap - $40.0
    30 minutes to set up lathe, drill, and tap @ $40.00 an hour = $20

    grand total of $60

    Even if the tap is on hand, I would charge for it.

    Well from what see places listing for doing them seems to run about $70, ie 1hr labor. My gunsmith that just moved [V] usually charged me $20, if he charged me. This was if I just brought the BBL in and all he had to do was thread it. This does not include a cap that I believe many come with. I find an AR A1 flash hider for $5 works very well.

    That is a very common thread as it is what the standard AR flash hider is. I is also what most .22 and .223 suppressor are threaded in. I am not a machinest, but from what I understand you DO NOT want to use a tap to thread for suppressors. You need to use a threading machine to make sure the suppressor lines up with the bore.

    The thread on the supressors are sometimes 1/2"x28 - yes.

    But you will find a lot of supressors that have 1/2"x20 thread ( 1/2" UNF ) too.

    Most I've seen, have been with the UNF thread.

    Most of the muzzle breaks I install are 1/2 or 9/16 x 28. Ar's are 1/2x24. At Gander Mountain we charge $75 for the break and $75 for installation. Not my idea but Ganders standard pricing guide. It can be done with a die (not a tap) if a guide to keep concentricity with the bore is used

    AR Barrel threads are 28 per inch

    I stand corrected, I got the #'s transposed. AR's are 1/2x28, Ganders smaller cal. breaks are 1/2x24. My bad, thanks for catching it. By the way, thanks for the thread for cheap tools. Looked through it and there are some real good deals.
