If you had a 16 yr old girl...what kind of car?
I have been thinking over the whole.....vehicle....idea lately. She will not be mobile until December of next year so I am not even looking at buying anything now. I keep pondering the OLD TRUCK idea. I like the idea of the solid steel body between her and whatever she may plow into (praying now it never happens.) I don't like the idea of buying gas for a guzzler...and whatever we do end up getting will be driven a lot for certain.

Might consider a Chevy Blazer. I had a '98 and got about 20 mpg. Decent size vehicle.0 -
+1...bought a Lumina for a family car in the 90's. It was considered one of the safest cars on the road at the time. My oldest son has one. Very reliable and 29 MPH on the highway. 0 -

Sold Wonderful Daughter Andrea an '83 F-150 with the 300 inch straight 6. She got a job, paid for gas and insurance and bought the truck from us. Couldn't bring many kids along, got rotten mileage - that reduced her travel radius - and pretty safe. We still have it, and it's 4 sale. On her 18th birthday, I gave her my '83 280 ZX to use for college. We still have it.
Perfect Daughter Deanna was given wife's car - 2002 Subaru Legacy GT wagon - about the beginning of this school year - she's 17. This was against my wishes. She has no job. Is planning on going to the East Coast next year for college.
I think the truck idea is really the smart move.

Kodiakk...I do plan on having her work to pay at least for the insurance and she definately will have to earn her own gas money.....but living an hour out of the city means there aren't many jobs available. She may get a little bit of HAY type work...or maybe an odd job for someone with a little work she may can help with...but I don't think she could earn enough for an automobile I would let her drive.
Plus....knowing the long distance she is likely to drive at times...I don't want to worry about break-downs, overheating, so I want to have something safe. I guess being from the deep south does a little to me that makes me want to treat her like my sweetie....and the bit of red neck in me wants her in a truck!0 -
Dependable is a Honda Civic and Accord and they are great MPG. Toyota Coralla's are also great on gas and maintenence record. 0 -
Does she want a truck or a girly car?
If she wants a girly car that is kind of cheap get her a used Chrysler Sebring, Mitsubishi Lancer or Eclipse. My friends mother drives a Suzuki
Aerio which gets good mileage and it is very roomy for its size.0 -
Locust - you don't want an old steel dinosaur. The steel inside of the vehicle is what does the damage to the occupants.
You would be wise to go with a Buick LeSabre with NO power options - windows, locks, sunroof, etc, etc - just the basics. Transmission is about the only weak link in these vehicles.

VW Jettas are very reliable with great gas mileage. I have a 91 with 42,000 miles on it and it gets about 30 MPG which is very nice right now. 0 -

It's hard to beat a Toyota Corolla for dependability and cost of ownership. We bought our daughter a new one when she graduated from High School. It saw her through college and she is still driving it today. Never any problems and it now has a bazillion miles on it. 0 -
If it is my daughter, she gets a late model VW Golf with the 1.9L TDI Diesel engine. I say that because that is what both my daughters are driving. The 02 gets 52 MPG and the Baby's 04 gets 45 on Biodiesel that I can brew from the Hospital's throwaway cooking oil for about $0.90/gallon.
Your daughter should be driving a 2006 Corvette convertible and wearing a string Bikini. Good investment maybe???

a great idea,mmmmmmm..... i have a daughter touching 18yrs, thats the legal limit here to drive a car..even when she gets there, if she cannot afford to run it herself,(i shall help with insurance) she dont get!![^]
