I think it has something to do with the pitch.
Mine will howl along when I play the harmonica.0 -
No, but I do. [:p] 0 -
He always howls when he hears a siren. 0 -
Mine howls at anything, even the phone. Sometimes when I leave the house and get in the truck, I hear him howling.
I downloaded a clip of air-raid sirens for when company comes over.
They love it.0 -
I've had some that do, and some that don't, and breed don't seem to matter. 0 -
Only time I hear my lab howl is when the fire truck rolls by.Other than that she dont make a sound! 0 -
All 5 hunting dogs and 1 yard dog do it as well 0 -
Get a Bullmastif. They don't howl. They don't even bark much. They pretty much want to eat and sleep. Anyone/thing gets on their turf or close to your kids they get pi**ed and awake from their nap and nail the intruder - no biting or mauling - just pin them (humans)to the ground. I raised and bred them them for 30 years. I miss them all... 0 -
Both my Dawgs howl at sireens.

Dalmation?0 -
My corgi does not howl, but he barks at everything including firetrucks.... 0 -
My dog will be two years old in January and I don't think she has ever seen (or heard) a fire truck. I wish that was her behavior problem. She watches TV waiting for a four legged creature to show up. Then she raises hell. She has learned to associate the music in dog food commercials with dogs on TV, so when she hears the music, she comes running. 0 -

Haha thats funny because my dog charges the TV also when a dog comes on it.0 -
my choir is way bad off key when they come buy
and at the train0 -
My dog will bark at em as they come and go, but during that magical time of the long drive-by whine, she howls and holds the note as long as possible, lol! 0 -
Neither of mine howl.....ever. They bark and bark at everything but I have never heard my Cocker Spaniel or the Pomeranian howl. Now I wonder what that would be like? 0 -
My black cocker of 15 years, Sammy, rest his soul.. used to watch the original Star Trek series with me, when he was a puppy.
When he would hear that first high pitched. ting. ting. ting. ting. in the opening score of the shows theme song, come -a- running from wherever he was in the house.
Then Capt. Kirk would start speaking and he would tilt his head and listen harder and patiently wait until that wooowooowoooo of the female voice would start... then sing / howl right along with her...
I tried my best to sushhhh , him up.. never worked.. he just sang - howled right along with the theme song until it was done.
Wished I had recorded it with a video camera... great dog.. I miss him......0 -
Mine have never seen a fire engine. I have lived here for 17 years and have never seen a fire engine come down my road[:D][:D]

This is funny because I was just thinking about what makes my dogs howl when a siren passes. 0 -

Same here my Rotts used to howl like crazy when they heard one.0 -
To add to my own original post...
I wonder if they think it's an alpha dog calling in the distance. I downloaded a few alpha wolf howls, turned up the volume on the speakers, and after the alpha wolf howl is over, my dogs start howling back. [:D]
Funny thing is that they will howl at the fire truck sirens, but not police sirens.0 -
yep sure does, then yells at me wrong place azzhole 0 -
I think the fire truck siren just has the right pitch. but I dont think they are calling back, as in the case of howling back at wolf or coyote howls.
I think the siren is painful to there ears and the howl is more like a response of please shut the hell up.
When my dogs howl back at a coyote or wolf, it seems to have a diffrent sound and feel than when they howl at a siren, or high pitched noise.0 -
i have one old lab that started howling in the past few years just when i come home, but it is a very low howl, ending if a ruh, ruh, ruh, ruh, Its undoubtedly a way of communication, responce to a wolf sounds sort of like a longing, and response to a siren sounds sort of painfull, and like my old dog sort of a welcom home. 0 -
Had a malmute/wolf cross once. He never barked, he would yip, wrorrol, wrorrol, with almost voice-like pitch inflections. Hold an almost conversation with you. And he always had to get the last word in...
Howl? Send the hairs on the back of your neck up, but only when the beagle down the road got going.0
