Aren't granpa's great.
My grandpa offered to help put some u-joints in my truck to which I gladly accepted. It was either him or my dad. If my dad and I do anything together it's usually 10 minutes of work followed by 30 minutes of arguing. It's not that my dad and I don't get along. It's just too much funny pizzing him off.
And with my grandpa you just don't argue. He'll think nothing about cutting a switch from a tree and lighting you up with it. This switching threat is so effective that even my mom doesn't agrue with him and she'd agrue with anyone.
When we worked on the truck, we had the best time. We talked about things in my life that I didn't know he knew about. He had lots of good advice to give me too. My grandpa is a very smart man.
I learned a few things about him I didn't know too. Some of which I still wish I didn't know
He really had lots of great stories about my mom when she was growing up to tell me. Some of which I could easily use to black mail her. Which I plan to do.
After we got done with the truck he offered to take me to Dairy Queen. Yeah grandpa's are great.

You're a lucky lady. I know you had some setbacks in life but your fortunate to have your Granpa. My maternal grand. passed when my mom was 22 and my paternal when I was 6. I hardly remember him.
I grew up not knowing what it was like to have the love, advice and companionship of a granpa.0 -
My greatest regret in life is that my kids did not have the opportunity to know my maternal grandfather. He was the neatest old man, but he died before most of the kids were born. 0 -
I wish my grandfathers were still around, there are so many thing I never got around to asking them......[:(]
But I still have the memories as they live forever[;)]0 -
There is nothing like Grandpas and although I only knew one I still am living things he taught me. 0 -
Sounds like you are a very lucky lady. Both of mine died before I was born. I hope you get to enjoy him for a long time! 0 -
My grandpas were both great characters. They also have been dead for years.
Haven't heard from them lately.0 -
Never knew either one of mine. 0 -
Here's what my Dad told me about when he was growing up:
When he was in his middle and late teens he wondered how his dad could walk and chew gum at the same time. He thought he was the stupidest man on earth. By the time he was in his early twenty's he was amazed at how much his dad had learned in just a few years.0 -
Mine are gone too. All three, great men.

My Grandpa, the only one I knew, died in 1969, when I was in the Nam. One of the saddest days of my life. He was a vet of WW1 and gave me all kinds of advice. My Grandma told me that my grandfather never wrote more than a dozen letters in his whole life, but he sent me 2 when I was overseas. We had an unspoken bond. The stearnest man I ever met, who never showed "mushy" emotions, but a great advice giver. I think of him most every day. Thanks for the opportunity to express it.[^] 0 -
Nice story CGR. Wish mine were still around to talk to. [:(] 0 -

My mother's biological father died before i was born and my grandmother re-married. [;)]0 -
The best thing about being a grandpa is, you can spoil the heck out of the kids, then send them home for your kids to get a dose of what they put you through as parents![}:)] 0 -

my maternal grandfather died before i was born so i never knew him.
my paternal grandfather died while i was away at my first semester of college. he was a good man. former navy, served in WWII at Norfolk, after discharge he came home and worked until he was 55, retired and did odd jobs for people to stay busy. He could build darn near anything, do auto mechanics, weld, woodwork, cook (i have a bunch of his recipes), sew etc...if you called him to come out and install a new water heater, he'd go with you to choose a new one, pick it up, install it and not take a dime. he'd ask you to make him a pie or something instead. we both loved photography (my field of study when i started college) and we'd challenge each other to picture contests where we'd go out together and shoot a dozen rolls a piece then he'd ship his off for prints while i did mine at home (i had a $1000 darkroom at home, plus if i needed i could go to the newspaper and use theirs). he was stoic and very observant. never made an enemy and everyone who knew him loved him. he was a notable WV historian and member of the I.O.O.F. (Internal Order Of Odd Fellows i joined as well, though at present I'm not active). He died of pancreatic cancer in 92. wish you guys had the opportunity to meet him, and my dad...very much like him. they are my heroes.0 -
I knew only one of my grandfathers..and he was my hero.I found him dead on christmas morning in 1972..sitting in his chair..sound asleep or so I thought,he had died of a major heart attack,we had been opening presents at my aunts and they lived next door to my grandparents,he had went to his house to get a cup of coffee and didn't return,my father sent me to get him, thats how I found him,I ran back and told them papaw won't wake up..first time I ever saw my father cry too..I was nine yrs old..seems like yesterday, I have never been a christmas kind of person my whole life..[:(][:(].Loko..Traci..enjoy them and heed their advice..you are lucky girl..glad Grandpa's there for you![^] 0 -
CGR, I'll let you in on a little secret: He got as much or more out of your time together as you did. Grandpa's just know. 0 -
I'm trying my best to be a good grampa now, grandsons 8. Problem is we live about 700 miles apart . We do talk a lot though and looks like he's gonna spend a week or so with me next summer. I wish I had appreciated my grandfather more,he died when I was 18 right after an argument.Something stupid on my part I'm sure though I don't like to think about it 0 -
Im fortunate to still have both grandfathers living. I spend as much time possible as I can with them, we are buddies. 0 -
My Dad's father, "Dziadek," died when I was 5, so memories of him are pretty sketchy. He was a tool and die man by trade, and died from a heart attack at his workbench at the factory. Left my dad an awesome set of precision tools. Liked his beer and boilermakers.
My Mom's dad, "Pappy" as we called him, was a hoot. Immigrated from Poland when he was 11. Talented baseball player, was scouted by the pro's, but his father told him "No son of mine is going to get payed for playing a game. Get a job." My, how times have changed. Worked in the coal mines and various factories. Don't know of anything he could not fix, or make, if he set his mind to it. Had a butt-kicking vegetable garden. Smoked cigarettes, cigars, and pipe since I could remember. Loved to fish, use to raise stone catties in his basement in a styrofoam cooler with a fishtank filter, and we would have to go to the spring every morning to get fresh water for them. Died on 1987 at the age of 86 from pancreatic cancer.0
