Overcoming sadness and grief
In the same week I lost my job, my woman, and my pickup truck (only transporation).
Not having any progeny, self destructive thoughts seem irrepressible at this point.
If I seek care from a mental health professional do I jeopardize my legal right to own firearms?

Dude - I agree with Philip
Many of us brothers have been right where you are......I was there back in 1995.
No woman is worth giving everything up. I don't care what anyone else says, GET BACK IN THE GAME !
It will be a slow start, but put your head down, consolidate, and go forward.
I had to sell a lot of things including some prized firearms, do it !0 -
Damn, Jon beat me to it.... 0 -

Lots of BS answers and no one answered your question. No you will not. You would have to be committed (voluntary or involuntary) to an institution and be declaired legally insane to lose your 2 ammendment rights. Good luck, I know you are so far down the bottom looks like up to you, but the good news is that you can only go up. Stop feeling sorry for your self, get counciling if you need it, and start making changes for the better.0 -
You my friend are depressed. You have a right to be but it is only temporary. Be carefull if you go see a Dr. for anti depressants. Your situation will improve without any medication. Go see a good friend and you might feel better. Dust yourself off and go on. You are not alone and everyone has bad times sooner or later. 0 -
It gets better. Hang in there and talk to a friend...or a pastor. 0 -
Flying Clay Disc:
"You'll get over the woman. Don't give her the satisfaction.
You'll get another job.
You'll get another truck.
It's the 'self destructive' thoughts which concern me! If you're serious, don't waste a minute analyzing some outcome related to guns, get the help you think you need, and do it now!
If you're contemplating the big dirt nap...your ability to own firearms in the future is completely irrelevant!
Call a friend, talk to somebody.
edit: BTW...been there too; 10 years ago. In retrospect it was probably the best thing that ever happened to me, but it sure didn't seem that way then."
Well said.0 -

I USED TO CRY BECAUSE I HAD NO SHOES, TILL I MET A MAN WHO HAD NO FEET. time heals all wounds, it will get better 0 -
Look at the bright side of things-
You could be living in Rwanda, No clothes, little water and food
and what little food and water you do have. Someone will try and kill you for it everyday. See! life ain't so bad after all.0 -
I was in the same boat in 1990. Woman left, wrecked my Harley, operation on shoulder cost me 4 months work and almost my house. I saw what the depths of depression looked like and I didn't care for it. Went to see family doctor whose wife I went to school with.
I was one of the first of his patients to be prescribed Prozac. In two weeks I was dating again and having the time of my life.
That was 17 years ago and am have done quite well since then.
Oh, the wonders of modern medicine.[:D]
Oh, yeah, I got a new wife in 1992 and a new Harley in 2007.
I'm not saying that pharmaceuticals are the only answer, but with real depression, you don't just "snap out of it".
Mouse, e-mail me and I send you my phone number. I'd like to talk.0 -
2 years ago, I lost my newly built home and a six figure income due to hurricane katrina. I, too, had those same thoughts. Talk with someone, Dr., pastor, friend, someone who will listen. IT WILL GET BETTER!!!
Hang in there, my friend.

Sixteen years, six months, and some-odd days since I blacked out for the last time, and woke up knowing I had to decide whether to live, or die. Life at that point had very little going for it, other than not being death. The fear of Hell left me no choice. I was already there, knew what I was facing, and knew if I died in that condition there'd be no escaping, ever.
I have never regretted the decision to live, nor the decision to do whatever it took to do so, though at the time it really seemed only the lesser of two evils.
There are different paths by which you can seek therapy, counselling, call it what you will. Some involve no legal or formal arrangements whatsoever, are done strictly on a voluntary, outpatient basis, and thus have no bearing on your legal right to own guns.
Speaking as one who's been there -- if you're able to worry about your guns -- you're already one step in the right direction. People who are so far gone as to possibly turn thought into action (as in suicide) don't worry about their rights in the future. This is something you're just going to have to tough out -- but it isn't being tough to refuse to seek help, it's just foolish.
Talk to a clergyman, if you're comfortable doing that. Look up AA in the phone book, call the number listed, and explain to the person who answers (who does so because he or she cares and has been at rock bottom, before -- not because it's a job) that you aren't drinking, but hurting, and don't want to impose but need help. Odds are they can give you that, if only to say, "Do this. Call here. I know someone, let me get you in touch." Call some of the numbers listed under "mental health" in the phone book. The world's full of people willing to help, many of whom have been where you are and will be happy to share whatever gave them the strength to get through it -- you won't have to try overly hard to find what you need.
Check back and update us on how it's going.0 -
Thing's could alway's be worse, you still have more than alot of folk's.[;)] 0 -
Been there. Believe me bro,it ain't nuthin but a speed bump. In a year just a memory. Plus some of worst times in my life were folowed by the BEST.
Now get out there, get drunk and find some nasty ho to bop your blues away!
BTW: On Glenn Beck TODAY, he said there is such a bill being considered in Washington. In fact it could go so far as to include ANY diagnosed mental problem from ADD to stuttering. And once diagnosed, no reprieve. You lose your gun rights forever.0 -
TALK to someone and LISTEN to GOOD advice. It is fcked up, to start with, I to "have been there." Stay cool, stay calm, get to some place right now, out of the way and reflect, Think your way through the process, time will help...imo,,,nambu 0 -
So, Now you have a reason to interview a lot of women for the position, you have reason to go and look at whatever vehicle you have been wishing on, and you are not tied to any place, job, woman....
Sounds like a fresh new start.
Get after it!
No less than Benjamin Franklin said "a man needs to repot himself every so often, unless he become root bound.."
Sounds like the beginning of a new adventure!0 -

EXACTLY! It's an opportunity!0 -
I said this is something you'll have to tough out, but I'm going to add this, so it's said in plain words --
Whatever answers you might be offered, whatever advice you might be given -- if it's worth listening to, it will involve you having to largely help yourself, in the sense of taking responsibility for the outcome, and choosing to get better instead of -- the alternative. You will, like I said, find people who are willing to help, but they can only be guides. You have to walk the road yourself. And, like others have said -- this too will pass. Don't decide on a permanent solution to a temporary problem.0 -

Nothing can make you forget a woman like another woman. Go out with your best female friend, drink a few brewski's, pour out your heart to her (away from other guy's eyes of course, other chicks watching is okay [:p] ), and let her give you the encouragement you need to get nicely dressed in the morning and get another job. Then a new set of wheels, and by then, she will have you lined up for a date.
Works every time!

Or get on a flight to the Philippines and let me guide u around for a coupple of weeks [:)][:)][:)]
If you still feel depressed u can visit a professional there and use your secret name Joe Smith.or your other secret name John.Johnsson...0 -
In life, there is no "yin" without "yang," they are both sides of the same coin. Take away the grief and sorrow from your life, joy and contentment lose their meaning. Suffering and pain are just a part of human life.
I, too have been there. Found out that my then husband was cheating on me and received a diagnosis of breast cancer within 5 days of each other. First thing I decided was that I would stop using the phrase, "It couldn't get any worse," because, of course, it always can. You think there is no light at the end of the tunnel (and if you do see the light, it's a train). It's hard to imagine things could get better at this point, when you are wallowing in your failures and shortcomings.
But guess what? Life is what we make of it. Attachments to people and posessions are transitory and illusional. They come, and they go. We cannot change the past, but we can learn from it, and the future is uncertain. All we really have in life is today, and a promise to ourselves to live today as well, love as much, and work as hard as we know how to.
You still have your heart, your head, and your hands. Be strong. Talk to a wise and trusted friend or relative. Talk to a doctor or mental health professional. I would not think less of anyone who did. Do what you have to do.
Sending you kind thoughts for finding your inner peace.0
