Trapping Chipmonks
Bought a couple of traps today and need to know what bait to use. I prefer hollow points but the neighborhood makes that unreasonable. I'm doing the catch and release thing, catch them here and release at the mayors house. He is a rodent so they should get along fine. Thanks!

22 smoothbore with birdshot or a 9mm shotgun.

I would use apple pieces, worked for me, but I used a blowgun and cleaned out the bird feeder, shot 32 monks over a summer and tanned the hides for taxidermy class in college, made a skull cap/biker hat out of them w/a fox squirell tail, course I had all the stripes going the same way, and cut outs for your ears even a chin strap, got an a+ for originality.....really liked that hat a lot of work involved...then my roommates dog ate it..boy was I pizzed[V] Loko 0 -

KSU, plus one! i also have a vicious attack cat, he used to bring us home "presents" all the time, birds, mice, frogs, snakes, baby rabbits, he always brought the birds home alive and he would come i, then the bird would be flying all around the kitchen.0 -
A good pellet rifle works wonders on pest, anything around 1000fps will do just fine 0 -
peanut butter works really well for most rodents. Might as well shoot them, if they are released elsewhere they will not survive anyway. 0 -

peanut butter and apples, maybe throw in some bird seed. 0 -
Peanute, sunflower seeds, apple chuncks. 0 -
why dont you get a big rat trap, drill a hole through it, tie a string in the hole and stake the other end to the ground. Bait it with apple or peanut butter.
WHACK!!!! dead chipmonks. Stake it to the ground so they wont run off with the trap if it dont kill em right off.0 -
I agree: Peanut butter is oily and the scent travels very far into the wind. This is the most effective mousetrap bait I have ever tried! Some form of dried corn sprinkled lightly on top or mixed with PB will add a sweeter smell and the yellow "bits" are recognized by the critter as potential seeds. I trap squirrels baited with peanut butter and cracked corn and them pop them with a pump-action air rifle (which can be shot within city limits both legally and quietly) or transfer them into a burlap sack... and... get creative with various heavy things... 0 -
bird seed..... 0 -
I guess I don't get some of you guys, but it is still a free country!
I am watching a squirrel out my office window right now, eating some spilled bird seed that the birds knock out.
As long as you don't feed them by hand, where they lose their fear of man,......I have never had an issue with any bird or squirrel. Heck we even used to have some foxes out here, but too much development now.
I just don't understand wanting to live in the country, and not see a living creature move on your land,.........what do I know?0 -
I only kill squirrels when they eat my poultry feed, raid my garden, or become unnaturally overpopulated due to a lack of predation. They're all fuzzy 'n cute, and stuff. 0 -
I understand that!
I don't have a farm,......plus we have plenty of hawks that pick off the weak ones.
I do not feed them purposely, as they can become a pain then.
Had to make my fiance, and her son stop feeding them with the peanuts, as one year we had a huge population with very little acorn fall from the oaks.
I had to explain the "cruelties" of nature to them both, as they were keeping alive animals that would not survive otherwise,......they listened.0 -
I use a wash tub filled with water about 4 inches from the top and then sprinkle sunflower seeds on the water.Put a length of 2x4 across the tub. They try to get the seeds and fall in and drown. 0 -
Rasins work very well. 0 -
Peanut butter, cheese whiz or table scraps - just about anything will work. 0 -

There's squirrels and then there's squirrels. The Fox and Flying squirrels are fine. They come in, get some chow then leave. Red squirrels on the other hand are satan's little disciples. They will get in your walls, ceiling, garage, basement, everywhere. They are more destructive than any rat and will not ever go away. I declared war on them shortly after they chewed through my phone lines in the walls. Now they were a fire hazard. I have killed 172(confirmed) and another dozen or so unconfirmed.........so far.[}:)]0 -
Red tree rats must die, they are bad! I more than enjoy wacking the little devils.Last year they got into my house, tore up everything in the garage, bait them with bird seed,177 to the head, done deal.

Well, they don't like cheese, will try peanut butter next. 0 -
I know they like strawberries, too.
Had to make a wire cage to cover my flat this spring, as last year I did not get a single one before the little bastages got to them.
Ditto on the killer-kitty, too. She dispatches 2-3 in a week, that I know of, along with birds, moles, mice, ......0
