Slavery links Al Sharpton, Strom Thurmond
The late Senator Strom Thurmond, who once fought against civil rights, and Reverend Al Sharpton, widely recognized for his defense of civil rights.
It's the shock of a lifetime and a truly ironic twist of fate.
"It was probably the most shocking thing in my life," Sharpton said at a news conference Sunday, the same day the tabloid revealed the story.
The reverend Al Sharpton is a descendant of slaves who were once the property of the Thurmonds, ancestors of the late senator Strom Thurmond is perhaps one of the strongest supporters of south segregation.
The news broke Sunday morning on the cover of the Daily News. Their findings were from ancestry.com, a website that tracks people's roots.
After an extensive search, they found that the reverend's great grandfather, Coleman Sharpton, his wife and two children were given as a gift to Julia Thurmond. Julia's grandfather is Strom Thurmond's great grandfather.
Thurmond, of South Carolina, was once considered an icon of racial segregation. During his 1948 bid for president, he promised to preserve segregation and, in 1957, he filibustered for more than 24 hours against a civil rights bill.
So what is next?? The reverend says he's not really sure. This painful journey into his past has made him focus on the future.
He now encourages all African Americans to look into their roots.

It was very common in the days of slavery for masters to have sex with their female slaves.
So, Al Sharpton is probably the grandson of Thurmond's grandfather. They are cousins!0 -

You are correct, warriorsfan. She came out of the closet two years ago. Lives up in Chicago now, I saw an interview with her on 60 Minutes.
But, like I said above, this is an old tradition in the Southland.
When I was a Paramedic in central Georgia, we always had to go out on calls for an old 60 year old black lady named Dorothy, I will omit her last name. This lady was a total alcoholic, looked rough as hell. I myself had to see about her on at least ten calls when she was passed out on the street.
The medics who were from that small town told me that when she was eighteen years old, she was the most beautiful woman in Baldwin County, and had a build that turned the head of every man in town.
There was a very powerful US Representative from that town, named Carl Vinson. How powerful was he? Today there is a nuclear carrier named after him.
Well, these local guys told me that when Dorothy was eighteen, Mr. Vinson took her up to DC to stay at his house and be his housemaid. Mr. Vinson was married of course.
I always wondered about that one. I'm sure Mr. Vinson could have hired a maid from DC. Funny, he didn't take up an old, ugly maid from his home town.0 -

This will only encourage and feed the flames of an issue that should have died decades ago. The rich white older man taking a downtrodden black girl for a mistress has in no way been exclusive to the South. We only hear about these cases because the rich white man who holds POWER has something to lose if the story gets out.

This is great news for Sharpton, since he already hated the guy, He'll only have forgive him once to get into Heaven... and being that he is a Reverend this should be a cakewalk for him to do and achieve his ticket to the promised land....No bible thumper in the world would pass on a chance to forgive such a horrible thing as this and possibbly secure a free ride for himself.... The connection of black politicans have is religion. Al Sharptons actions don't speak to well for the Christians that give his church money. He's a discrace to the U.S. Senate and the church that gave him the designation as a minster of God.
I saw Al Sharpton and Jesse Jackson, appearing on a talk show, they dugg deep into American society for Michael Richards spewing of racial epithets during his L.A. comedy club routine.
Richards comments weren't apporiate, however, Sharpton and Jackson blanket indictment of everybody not black isn't taking the moral high ground I would'nt expect from a true minister of God.
However, as polite as my comments are, these comments have the potentional of becoming race card material in America's so called by some politically correct society.0 -

Yup! Restrictions on international adoptions have increased over the last few years because countries are concerned their youth are being sold into slavery from one third world nation to the next.
