Is marrage just a saying or does it mean more
Talking with my baptist friend, which is always interesting. Anyways our views on marrage are far different then I expected. He felt marrage was what made you finnally commit to a woman. My opinion was that marrage was only marrage and was not the commitment. My feeling was you surely do not have to be married to someone to be committed. However insurance is sure cheaper and taxes are slightly imporved.
So can you be together for many years without being married or do you have to marry in order to be committed to a significant other?

What I found to be the most interesting was not being married was against his religion. I didn't understand that and stopped probin so not to upset him. 0 -
'the institution of marriage' other than for legal purposes, is absolute BS. It is advetrtised and glorified to women much as expensive guns are advertised to members of this forum. You have to spend big bucks $$$ or its not a good wedding. If 2 people love each other it doesnt matter if they ask the churches or JOP's permission. 0 -
I've never seen it in the Bible where it was "against the religion" not to be married. However it is a sin (therefore against the teachings of the religion) to have sex outside of marriage. Since most couples who live together have sex, I'd assume that's what he meant.
I think marraige, if viewed maturely, does offer more of a commitment that just living together.
It's kinda like the difference between shooting a semi auto repeater and a single shot. W/a repeater you may be subconsiously more tempted to make a sloppy hurried shot because you know you have a follow up. Than to take the time and effort to make your ONE SHOT COUNT.
In relationships if you can easily just walk problems that WILL arise, you're more likely to do so than to try to work it out.
Personally I don't think most people nowdays are really willing to make a life long commitment. Nor do they take the time to try (as best as possible) to find a person they can live with for extended time (IE Rest of life). Staying with the same spouse isn't easy. Especially for the 1st few years. But if BOTH parties are commited, eventally it should become easier. But maybe not ever really easy.
It's a tough haul sometimes, but in my experience as someone who has had prior failures, the further you go, the more rewarding it becomes.0 -
Marriage is a Covenant between the Couple and the Lord. Without it, there is no real commitment.

Marriage..? I believe it CAN be good, but then again it's usually nothing more than paper. 0 -
Mine's GREAT!
The first one was TWO papers - one to get
me in and the other to get her out!

Marriage has changed over the centuries,,if you look it up you will find it had very little to do with religion,,it ws done as a contract between families and was almost always arranged,,the bride and groom may not have even known each other before the marriage,,then when you through in the religious part you can have many wives "Jacob married 2 sisters" or its OK to have concubines "Solomon had 700 wives and 300 concubines " or if your wife was barren you just knocked up her handmaiden if you wanted children,,,One of my favorites was ,,I think "Deuteronomy 25:5" but I could be wrong,,,but its where you are supposed to marry your brothers widow ,,
Modern marriage is just a contract between two people and the Government,,if think not,,just try to get lawfully married without a license.....0 -
everyone should experiance marriage once. then you should be committed to a nut house if you ever do it again[:0][B)][B)] 0 -
Getting married for the third time really meant to me what Buddy said about 50 years ago ... "It just doesn't matter anymore". 0 -
I was saying what it is SUPPOSED to be.

I have been married three times, I should have been committed. Don0 -
When it works, it's apparently awesome....
When it doesn't, it's hell.
Are you a betting man?
Sound to me like you are a bit "wishy-washy" on the subject. The question is, what is your intended's ideals? If you know she wants the wedding, but indicates that she just wants to be with you regardless, but she really wants the weddding. Things may be okay for a couple of years, but it will come up to bite you in the butt if you are not square with each other. Honesty is the key.....0
