Go ahead and shoot that mutt.
Just say that it reminded you of a red tailed hawk.
You will be applauded by half the people on this forum.

Doubt they'd give this info, trolls seldom do, for obvious reasons.

I don't know if it is a felony here but I know it is against the law. Neighbor shot a stray that we were trying to get rid of cause it had the mange and had become aggressive towards the kids in the neighborhood. Someone heard the shot and called LE. The sherrif that responded asked and we told it was just us trying to cure this problem. Here our Sherrif's department is also the animal control. We had made three written complaints about the dog, but the LE were unsuccessful in trapping the mutt. My neighbor saw the dog cutting across his pasture and shot him. The LE told us the it was against the law to shoot a dog, but since we had tried to take care of it the right way he would not cite him. He took the body to the vet for testing...said that was routine. I have two dogs and my neighbor has three...we are not dog haters by any strech but we keep them in our yards with fences. I don't think you can say that you love your pet when you let it run loose and get sick and become aggressive. Just my two cents worth.

  • CA sucks
since when was it illegal to kill a dog?
If its owned by someone, I can see you being held liable for the cost of replacing the dog, but certaintly not criminal charges or anything, sort of the equivilant of a parking ticket.
Well that is if there is a valid reason for killing it, if your a sicko going around killing animals for fun (just to kill them, hunters who eat their kills have a valid reason), then I think it should become a criminal offense.

Here in NY, putting down of an animal by a private citizen is considered to be both: 1)illegal discharge of a firearm, and 2)cruelty to animals (!!)

There was a case recently here where a man hit and badly injured a dog, and, wanting to do the legal thing, sat and waited for half an hour for a cop or animal control to bother showing up. Finally he couldn't stand the poor beastie's misery anymore and put it down himself. The owner of the dog backed him up 100% when he found out about it.

The guy got charged with animal cruelty (for not letting a "licensed professional" put the animal down), illegal discharge of a firearm (since he was on the side of the road), and reckless endangerment (apparently because it involved a gun). They cuffed him, booked him into the county jail, and the whole bit.

Eventually after massive, and I mean MASSIVE, public outcry the DA dropped the case, but promised that he'd continue to prosecute any private citizen who puts down an animal for any reason.

Talk about cruelty to animals. Just to show you that our Goverment thinks we are to stupid to safely dispatch a injured animal with a firearm.

Lesson learned here. Abandoned animals, put down quickly and keep your mouth shut. That's the humane way.

Thanks guys for the help & support.
Next time rest assured there will be NOTHING said, when a stray shows up, we get about 30 + a year here at the house & my wife always feeds them till we can relocate them to a new home, but you can bet your bottom dollar , THAT WILL NEVER happen again.
I am 48 years old & just don't understand how some people think.
