Texas Requires Schoolgirls to Get STD Vaccine
AUSTIN, Texas (AP) -- Texas Governor Rick Perry has signed an executive order that will require all schoolgirls to be vaccinated against the sexually transmitted virus that causes cervical cancer.
Girls will have to get Merck's new vaccine Gardasil, which protects against strains of HPV that are responsible for most cases of cervical cancer. Texas becomes the first state to require the shots.
Merck is paying for efforts to pass laws in several states that would require the vaccine for girls as young as eleven or 12.
Conservatives are concerned that the requirement will step on parental rights, and will signal tacit approval of sexual activity for young girls.
The federal government approved Gardasil in June, and a government advisory panel has recommended that all girls get the shots before they are likely to be sexually active.

That is a conundrum to say the least. Does it infringe on your rights? Yes. Is it a good idea to get it? Yes.
I say, that if they govt can make you get all the other vaccinations, then they should be able to mandate this one. There's arguments both ways though. damned if you do and damned if you don't.0 -
Girls need shots at 11 or 12. Someone needs to check the govner out and just see who he is screwing. Or maybe he's cathlic, that would explain it. 0 -
Yeah, ole Gov. "Slick" Perry also received campaign contributions from Merck. A former one of his staff members is now a head honcho at Merck also. If this is on the up-and-up, why didn't it go through the normal approval process instead of an executive order?[:(!] 0 -
you're probably very right 0 -
If and when a young women becomes seriously or gravely ill - or worse dies - from the series of injections - and very sadly there will most assuredly be a few - the good governor can proceed hire an attorney to represent him personally in the lawsuit and the entire state of Texas and Merck can do likewise. Talk about overstepping the authority of one's office! Perhaps Rick Perry should be made to wear a condom on his nose for sticking it where it simply doesn't belong.
And folks think that New York politicians are bad!!!!0 -
More regulations, more populace control, more grumbling, no action.
Old story of the slide of America into a socialist/facist nation.
Be happy. Didn't you all just get to watch the Superbowl and drink beer?
Daddy Gov't knows best. Just shut up, drink your beer, watch your TV, do what you are told and, oh, by the way, pay your taxes.0 -

If yer gonna throw in religion, might as well learn to spell.[B)] Cathlick.[:0][:D]0 -
When the public's health can be jeopardized by the spread of a highly communicable and very serious disease, then vaccinations are the correct and proper thing - even if they must be mandated by law. Yet, flu shots are not mandatory - are they?
Now, if a disease is not communicable throughout the general population by sputum or the touching of common items by an infected person, then I believe that forcing a person to acquiesce to a series of injections - still unproven by the masses - is clearly a violation of one's rights.
Does the good governor of Texas really think that he will twist the arms of the Scientologists (one example) who for "religious beliefs" absolutely refuse any such intervention?0 -
Sorta like the old Polio shots.
Dammed if you do & Dammed if you dont.
And from talking to the wife & my daughters, they think its a good ideal.
They ought to know, know what I mean.
I'm against it in a way, but the girls should have a choice too.0 -
Our governer is a Socialist. Won't do anything to protect out border from illegal invasion. Now this.
The vaccine will NOT protect from a varieties of this cancer.
He has NO business how I watch my daughters health.
How much mercury is in the vaccine?
Talk about a rise in autism!
He can BUTT OUT![:(!]0 -
I wonder why vaccines for Hep B are not required? It is available. 0 -
No one is forcing ANYONE to get this vaccine. It is only required for girls who attend public school and even then the parents have a means to opt out if they wish to do so. So no, no one is being forced to do anything. 0 -
2 barrel...no nerve I've been dealing with baptifundacult scum for a long time..I can recognize the type instantly. Do you still do your own 12 year olds? Beach 0 -

You smell a rat here? As always, the "fix" is on. Remember the smallpox/anthrax coup? Send a few envelopes to some notables and the government buys billions of dollars worth of antidotes. Corporate welfare for the pharmaceutical industry. As always, at the expense of the taxpayer.0 -

thats true. then why didnt texas say "we have the vaccine if you want it" instead if "Texas Governor Rick Perry has signed an executive order that will require all schoolgirls to be vaccinated"
Also, if America get s federalized health care system these kind of things will no longer be "optional". the government will say "if you dont get OUR vaccinations then YOU dont qualify for coverage0 -

Hey, what's all the fuss?
I'm sure Merck gave this vaccine at least as much R&D as they did Vioxx....
oh.0 -
Why don't the good folks of Texas work toward getting their good governor "recalled"? There should be more "recall" going on in this country and get these lunatics out of office. 0 -
I don't think this is a bad idea. Cooter Warts is nasty! 0
